I have been working at Bimbo Bakeries

    Pros

The company culture. They always try to think of associates when making decisions. A lot of very good people work for BBU.

    Cons

The company is in a huge transition. After the 3 aquisitions to build the company, there is a lot of changes and transition which can cause uncertainty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop working in silo's. Too many iniatitives all happening at the same time and not enough coordination. The left hand doesn't always know what the right hand is doing.

    Pros

Bimbo will give you everything you need to succeed. The company will spend any amount of money needed to get whatever you need if it helps productivity.

    Cons

Split off days were always a con in the baking business but it's that way at every bakery. Really nothing you could do about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try harder to stop the closure of plants.

I have been working at Bimbo Bakeries full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

-Allows local management to make decisions.
-Takes care of their employees and allows you to get rid of the dead weight instead of allowing them to drag you down like most companies.
-First company I have been in where HR actually tries to HELP their employees instead of protecting the company from law suits.
    -Product quality is solid.

    Cons

-Logistics causes some issues when product fails to arrive timely.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

-Finish ironing out the kinks in the logistics and hammer Flowers while they are distracted with their expansion.

I have been working at Bimbo Bakeries full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    Large company. If you want to grow, there are plenty of areas you could go. very good pay; feel rewarded for what I do; management truly wants to improve process, make progress and do good by the comapny; great resouces available for employees to seek insight and training;

    Cons

    bread guy mentality; very male driven industry; slow to react and change; some senior management is very old school;

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company needs to diversify its work force. It needs to not only promote from within, but also look for outside talent to bring in new and better ways

It takes a lot of work to build a bread route almost from the ground up, but it can pay off very well in the end.

I worked at Bimbo Bakeries full-time for more than a year

    Pros

You are self employed, to a certain extent; You set your own hours, to a point; It can be very good money if one is dedicated, and unafraid of hard work and long hours in the beginning. You can sell the business anytime you want, provided you find a buyer for it, of course. Also, any average sales you add to your route, you add to the equity you hold in it, e.g. if you bought your route for $75,000 and you added $1000 in gross weekly sales over 6-12 months, you can sell your route, depending on your region's averaging system, for $85,000, with the extra ten being pure profit.

    Cons

While you are considered self employed, you do have to comply with company, regional, and store standards which, in and of itself isn't a con, but sometimes there are individual "kingdoms" within those that can make life miserable if you aren't careful and diplomatic, but that's the way it goes no matter your occupation. Prissy store managers and angry backroom receivers(a.k.a. "trolls) are another matter, and can be just as troublesome or worse. Being amiable, friendly, and as non-confrontational as possible, attempting to find solutions that are palatable for you and they(whomever "they" may be, i.e. BBU, store managers etc.) are the best tools in getting along, and sometimes avoiding catastrophe, such as losing your route.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thrift stores are a bad idea for I.O.'s: They encourage the I.O. to let his shelves go empty rather than catch the extra sales and have a little extra product leftover which the company will count and penalize him for.

    Pros

Compensation is very generous due to union contract. You get paid well and you have the potential for overtime.

    Cons

Because of the nature of the baking business, this is a 24/7 operation. Weekends and nights are often the norm.
