    Based on department

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Hercules, CA

    Prossome great people
    leniency
    flexible
    learning opportunities

    Consolder crowd of employees
    no innovation
no upward mobility (for this particular dept)
    behind modern technology
    some very difficult people
every team for themselves (very segregated)
onboarding process is not very efficient

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management should provide more support in this particular department. The reason why there were so many frustration and loose ends is because the PMO did not provide enough support.

Stable company but not a Wall St darling. Will always be here.

    Operations (Current Employee) Hercules, CA

ProsGood work-family balance. Decent place to start your career but then you will bump against the glass ceiling where top management wants no change.

ConsTop executives have never worked anywhere else and they aren't moving. But man are their salaries increasing even though sales is not. Lacking direction right now.

ProsGood working environment, but not technology oriented.

    ConsNot competitive salary.
Management does not understand technology, also even if it is for the goodness of Company they try not to do anything so that their job will be safe.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave to put employers interest also in the math.

Bio-Rad has exceeded my high expectations as a recent hire.

    CORP (Current Employee) Hercules, CA

Pros-the company is accepting and highly tolerant of employees of all ages and backgrounds
-senior management is approachable. It is common to see executives of this multibillion dollar company in the same cafeteria as all employees
-knowing that the skills you bring to the company are making a difference in the world through ground breaking research in all of our company's products

Cons-Can't think of any cons. The workload can be demanding but forming a good relationship with your manager will make the workload much more manageable.

Advice to Senior ManagementThank you for giving me an opportunity to join the Bio-Rad legacy. I'm one of the youngest additions, but I can see myself being a part of this company for a decade or more!

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

    Fabulous place to work

    Manager (Current Employee) Hercules, CA

ProsI go to work happy every day and come home that way. My management is terrific, the pay is great, and the work is stimulating. What else could one ask for? Oh, one more thing--it's a family-controlled company so we never have to worry about being sold off.

ConsDecision-making isn't always straightforward; often it's not clear who is responsible or accountable for specific decisions.

    Overall positive

Project Manager (Former Employee) Hercules, CA

    ProsGood people, dedicated workforce,

ConsLeadership is conservative and advancement is contingent upon who you know vs. performance.
In some groups bully behavior is encouraged.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to people, watch for hearing what you want rather than what is actually happenings.

Bio-Rad Labs is great place but....has it's fair share of problems.

Not a Senior Staff Scientist but lesser (Former Employee) Hercules, CA

ProsIt is a more or less stable company than others. Good people to work with. Great benefits package. You get a promotion in 6 months at first, then the next is every 5 years or longer. You get exposure to many aspects of R&D, marketing and regulatory affairs if you are in the right groups and is better used as a launch pad in your career.

ConsFeels no longer like a family owned business but is more shareholder oriented since David Schwartz died 3 years ago. They layoff people and projects to make the business grow. Pay is low and promotions are slow (5 years at a time) It is a production based company and has a low emphasis for personal growth. Work-life balance can be skewed. Don't get a laptop. If you do, they will expect more from you. You can easily put in 10-11 hr days and the extra work isn't recognized but then becomes expected. The leadership is stern and confrontational and resistant to new process changes. They are an infantile state of robust design and have no competitive advantage with larger diagnostic companies. You are given a company credit card and you are expected to pay late charges if they don't pay your bill on time even though it isn't your fault. Getting repayment can be a challenge and a huge negative. Get receipts for everything. Management makes you feel bad for taking your personal time off from work from your own account and you must have an explanation to do so, even though policies written encourage you to use your account balance because you have earned it which is highly contradictory between ideals and actions. They lay off 20 year and 39 year seniority personnel right before retirement.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have a high turn over for several reasons and lose your top talent because Bio-Rad HR can be cheap, and management is invasive and disrespectful to people who truly care about the growth of the company. Share what other groups are doing. Less project visibility gives people a sense that management is single sided and secretive. Recognize the amount of time put into the work and worry less about what people produce since projects and priorities change so fast and much it's hard to maintain traction and receive recognition.

Long time employee with a 20+ year view on management evolution.

    Manager (Current Employee) Hercules, CA

ProsCurrent Life Science Group Management is ambitious, competitive, greed driven, and dictatorial. They will grow the business, so there will always be jobs at BRL.

ConsNo loyalty for long term employees. Life Science leadership views long term employees (20+ years) as a hindrance to growth, innovation and change. Its like working for the Godfather, but with no loyalty. Now bow your head the kiss the ring. The business will grow, some times at the expense of the employee base.
