Long hours, unsophisticated management, inefficient, little span of control

    Pros

Friendly atmosphere, Good benefits, pay and bonuses depends on politics. Stocks are great way to compensate the boss who's a jerk. Campus is pretty near a swamp. The EH&S dept is in place but mostly window dressing for their insurance provider

    Cons

when I can there I loved it. Slowly I was introduced to reverse sexisim and age discrimination. Lots of Political correctness to the point of the inability to function on a pragmatic level. If your from Cal or Stanford you'll have lots of buddies more emphasis who and where you went to school vs what you can do. Mid level mangers are obsequies sycophants who rarely stand up for the workers. Lots of political games.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Walk the walk not just talk. Stop the cronyism from the Genetech Mafia. EH&S should be more responsive Safety and environmental issues vs how to limit company liability.

    Pros

    Friendly place.
I think the opportunities for personal growth is BioMarin's strong point. The company is small enough and there is a need for assistance everywhere, that you can offer you assistance and learn new tasks. This helps you explore different positions in the department and company.
Office Culture is great. The group of people that I work with are friendly and helpful. This is a huge bonus to my position, but this is just my team.

    Cons

Work-life balance is not as great, people are over-worked and that brings an expectation to eat lunch at your desk, work late and work at home. At our recent company off-site our VP did address this and the company does seem to be trying to move away from this.
Compensation is generally lower than the industry standard for the area.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

From my personal experience, might direct manager could use some training on how to critique. In general she is quick to save negative aspects without consideration on delivery. Then later she might give positive feedback but it usually feels forced. This is a trait that is hard to master and it would be great to train all those with management positions get a training.

    Pros

Pretty relaxed environment in terms of approachablity to management, lots of fun people and some opportunities to cross train is a plus! The events they throw are pretty fun and you definitely meet people from all areas of the company, so it is a good way to network. The job itself is quite repetitive so that can either be a pro or a con.

    Cons

Some areas do not allow room for deveopment and some are in need of more staff, so you can be stretched pretty thin if there are not enough people on your shift.

    Pros

Products make major positive difference in patient's lives. Reverse commute from SF and East Bay. Opportunities to grow in your career if you have the right manager. Competitive benefits. Start up mentality with plenty of latitude for those who want to push the boundaries of professional appearance and behavior. Great opportunities for consultants and contractors.

    Cons

Unrealistic timelines and expectations; this is a problem for workers and potentially a problem for patients. Currently lacking some systems which are necessary for sustained success in the biotech industry. Start up mentality with plenty of latitude for those who want to push the boundaries of professional appearance and behavior. Turn over rate is problematic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the turn over rate and investigate root cause.
Inability to manage resource loading will continue to hinder the organization as it continues to grow.
Avoid becoming like Johnson and Johnson (Alza). Be more like Genentech.

I have been working at BioMarin Pharmaceutical full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The culture is dynamic. Management is very accessible due to the open-door policy. The employees are smart, friendly, dedicated and committed to the company and the patients they serve. Although everyone is super busy there is work-life balance. Direct managers seem very committed to ensuring that their teams have what is needed to succeed. IT is awesome.

    Cons

I'm still in the honeymoon phase after only a few weeks with the company but it is inconvenient having so many campuses. It's often necessary to go between Novato and San Rafael for meetings to ensure you get the face time you need. Other than that, there are no cons.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work. Everyone I've met so far is satisfied and willing to go the extra mile.

    Cons

C- and VP- level management is great. Below that, it's hit or miss. Very director-heavy. Little promotion from within.

    Pros

Good Benefits, average pay, stock options, ESPP, and mostly friendly people at individual contributor level.

    Cons

Orwellian like work culture, there is a lot of whispering and looking over your shoulder. Many business procedures were justified by what "seems to work" and not necessarily what was the most productive and/or efficient way of accomplishing tasks. Management often sets unreasonable timelines, creating high levels anxiety within project teams. Management is unclear in communicating what the objectives or timelines of project are, which lead to confusion and frustraton. Project teams seem to be in a constant battle for resources and attention. Also, poor work-life balance, over inflated titles that don't mean much, and very unprofessional work environment where bad behavior is ignored by management.
