I have been working at BioWare full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are pretty nice - the salary for such a position is quite high. Add in game points, allowances for hardware, and so on, and it's not bad.
You also get your fingers in a /lot/ of EA games, if you don't mind a support position. A huge number are supported here.
Culture is mostly good - lots of employees are gamers as well, and it's easy to chat them up.

    Cons

However, support seems to be the limitation. There is very little opportunities to advance in any meaningful way. There is little to no help with career progression short of the occasional suggestion of an opening in the same studio.
There is no progression to Senior representative or Team leader - if you're at the base Customer Service job, you're staying there unless you find another employer, or know someone in another studio in the first place.
Work hours fit the customer base demands, but are rather brutal on the free time - even if you feel like doing things, you're often too tired to do so for a day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More opportunities, more help with advancement, and more actually giving credit to people who do a lot of the hard work.

A great company in a mediocre city

I have been working at BioWare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good work-life balance. A lot of employees are older, with kids; as a result, the focus is on sustainable work practices rather than a bunch of twenty-somethings competing to see who can work the most hours in a week. Although crunch does occur now and then, the company makes an effort to minimize it. Lots of friendly, intelligent coworkers. Generous time off allowance at Christmas. Free breakfast. Plenty of opportunities to work on high-profile, AAA projects. Good job security; although there have been selected layoffs, BioWare has largely been unaffected by sweeping cuts. The studio general manager, Aaryn Flynn is a genuinely nice guy who cares about his employees. Alberta has the lowest tax rate in all of Canada.

    Cons

Edmonton is an ugly, boring city. The winters are cold, dark and long -- and as a result, BioWare has a tough time recruiting new talent. There is no significant "tech" presence in the city; if you get laid off, your only other option is to go work for the oilfield. Cost of living in Edmonton is high (although not as high as say, Vancouver.) Salaries are lower than what you could be making elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be daring & confident -- blaze your own trail rather than constantly trying to follow in the footsteps of other successful games. Be accountable -- recognize and correct failures of leadership. Continue to hire aggressively from around the industry. Raise salaries to attract and retain top talent.

I worked at BioWare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Stable work environment
    Good pay and benefits
    Friendly Management

    Cons

    Short sighted decision making
"Old guard" preventing any new tech/ideas
Antiquated quality goals, need to match industry bests
No room to move up from within. Need to leave the studio and come back to get promoted.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within and get some junior level new blood in.

I worked at BioWare full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very talented and very friendly colleagues. Project direction is very strong, and I think many companies could learn from BioWare's professionalism. The company is spending a lot of resources on teaching and growing employees skills. Challenging, but very rewarding. Company culture is open and fun with lots of social events, friendships and beer!

    Cons

Bioware is a big company, and while they mainly run things their own way, the are also part of en even bigger corporation, EA. The higher levels of management can feel very corporate and not transparent. The strong project direction has a downside too - you have to deal with very strong egos and some arrogance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold on to a more family-like company culture, try and be more open and transparent on the managing side.

I have been working at BioWare full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    - Given chance to build own team
    - Worked with some of the industry best

    Cons

    - Lots of people promoted as 'industry experts' but without the skill
    - Hired from bad companies in Europe
    - No career improvement, even when working at a higher level
    - All approvals had to go through the US, so there was often no '24x7' until someone in US came in.
    - Rely to heavily on 'well it worked for us before' than designing or investigating new solutions
    - Like much of the game industry, expected to work until you break down. Many people working 90+ hour weeks.

I have been working at BioWare full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

friendly co-workers here, some people that have remained for a long time which shows loyalty. They supply a fun games room and regularly stock ice cream treats in the kitchen. An active living rebate and a games console rebate are nice additions as well

    Cons

EA has taken over and everything is about the finances now unfortunately. Seems like much of the soul of the company as a whole has left

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

think back to how things were before EA

    I worked at BioWare full-time

    Pros

Creative work, large challenges to solve. Most co-workers are great, and people are always interested in what is being worked on currently.

    Cons

Since EA's purchase of BioWare, new executives and office politics greatly decreased the fun of working there. Building good teams and helping people fulfill their potential has taken a back seat to office politics unfortunately.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace parts of management with people who want to build great products, terrific teams, and make the customers happy. Learn to recognize good managers from bad when hiring.

I have been working at BioWare full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Generally a good working philosophy. I've heard a lot of horror stories from other studios and fortunately I haven't experienced too many bad moments here at Bioware.

    Cons

The overall experience can be awesome or terrible depending on which project you're on. Each project is like its own studio, running independently from one another.
