    Pros

Great people and invest heavily in their employees. Amazing benefits and reasonable hours.

    Cons

Lots of contractors and if you are one you get treated like a second rate citizen. Lot's of politics at the higher levels and some kingdom building.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the percentage of contractors you employ.

    Pros

Cadillac benefits. Substantial pay (for those who have been with company 5years+ before pay dropped)

    Cons

Patient services within Biogen seems to be largely disconnected from the rest of the company. the president and vp truly control EVERYTHING. Work life balance is nonexistent and there is constant pressure to work overtime hours simply because leadership sets unrealistic goals and expectations. There is no transparency and policies are very subjective to the deferment of employees. Employees are afraid to speak up, disagree with manage my without fear of backlash and blackballing. employees are treated like elementary school students meaning you have to code yourself to be able to use bathroom take breaks or eat lunch. You can be questioned for any bathroom use that is considers 'excessive'. Employees are penalized for taking time from work to care for themselves and their family. Wonder vacation benefits but senior leadership has right threshold of how many people can be off a day. Many have lost days of vacation time because of this. Builds wrong behaviors in people because of unrealistic attendance policy. No work from home opportunities unless it is to the advantage of the business. Culture is based on fear and entirely different than corporate and manufacturing departments. Other than great benefits no real incentive to work there. Growth in patient services is nonexistent as managers demand that employees use their vacation or work overtime for any development or job shadowing opportunities. Senior managers is system that promotes bullying and intimidation. Employees are held accountable to departmental goals and metrics that change throughout the year without communication. Patient services seems to have lost its purpose and line of sight. It has gone from a company that truly cared about patients on Biogen therapies to that of hustling tactics to get patients to switch from other medication to Biogen therapies and pressuring them to stay on a bygone medication. It is ALL about the bottom line. Goal seems to be to get one person to work as 3 individuals. Did I mention NO WORK LIFE BALANCE! Would rather employees to work 6days a week simply because management does not how to delegate. Promotions are not based on experience and skill set but rather who knows and if they like you. Very high school environment where popularity and who you know is the only way to move up the ladder. In conclusion, if you are looking for an employer who does not value your work, overlooks you from promotions, expects you to live at work, penalizes you for not coming to work when you or family member is sick, requires you to provide calculation of time used away for bathroom use and lunch use, does not allow you to use vacation hours, pushes for you to work on company holidays, operates on bully system and cowardly coaching, views being late to work 1min the same as 4hrs and gives out demerits for it, no work from home opportunists, no transparency, tyrannical rule, and a strong disconnect of what employees do then working at Patient Services with Biogen is just for you.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees. You have highly educated individual who have great work backgrounds and you make no use of it. Stop squandering talent. Ease up on the reigns and stop the intense micromanaging. Live up to a harassment free work environment (seriously you have employees in anxiety medication, having panic attack, and breakdowns from harassment of they managers). Learn the culture of Biogen and allow it to grow in patient services. employees working there 3 years-to new hire should expect to make AT LEAST half of what other employees make. Pay is not on par with the market of the level of work that is done.

    Pros

The company offers excellent pay and benefits. Biogen is creating something good for the world and really values its patients. The strategic vision for the company is excellent and I believe Biogen will continue to dominate each market segment it ventures into for years to come.

    Cons

The ideas of junior scientists are not valued and contractors are treated well but strung along for years. In my opinion a contractor should never be renewed for a second year... if they're worth renewing, they're worth hiring FT. We're not talking about 16 year old kids, we're talking about adults who would like to have health insurance and 401k plans provided by their employer.

Junior and mid-level scientists are taught to fall in line, don't rock the boat, and never stand against convention or you will be flogged through a concerted effort of "powers that be". I see people come straight out of college with the same excitement and fresh ideas that the CEO and top executives are always talking about, but middle management does not have the same appetite for risk and 7 levels later, it's like working for contrary accountants, not innovative scientists and engineers.

All of these things are mostly isolated to the "little brother" RTP site in my experience. There is not any company sponsored social hour in RTP, while Cambridge has weekly social "hour" from 4-7 where beer, wine and appetizers/snacks are served. RTP feels like a forgotten little brother by comparison. When we launched a new drug, all of Cambridge went to Fenway Park to celebrate and cavort for hours, leaving work early and partying into the evening. In RTP, we celebrated in the Biogen courtyard from 12-2 and then wen't back to work. They were nice enough to provide us with a Fenway Park backdrop, in case we wanted to have a picture taken for the "Outta The Park!" theme. There was banana pudding and iced tea.

There is also a lot of talk about internal mobility and the value of a diversely trained work force, but in reality most of the people who are hired into mid and upper level positions have been doing the same job for years, only at a different company. There is a strong push for anyone wanting to advance their career to leave the company. People are routinely hired in at hire levels than peers with the same experience and education profile, and the longer you work there, the worse the disparity gets.

    Advice to Management

Eliminate ineffective middle managers, especially in development. Focus on creating a better culture in RTP (serving beer will go a long way). Make current employees feel like they are better off staying at Biogen than leaving if they want to advance their career. Move people around regularly to break the hard silos, encourage communication, invigorate workers and keep things interesting.

    Pros

Great work environment. Excellent resources to support world class research with some of the smartest scientist as colleagues. A lot of basic science research to support drug discovery programs. A very academic feel with almost daily seminars by academic professors. Environmental consciousness. Community outreach with programs like community lab, the Biogen foundation and support for NPR. Amazing benefits.

    Cons

Like all companies, business needs drive job security irrespective of the scientific importance

    Pros

Excellent benefits, company stock options, latest technology available for all employees, on-site gym, great company atmosphere (as long as your not in PS).

    Cons

Lack of clear communication from top down. Everyone has different interpretation of policies which leads to supervisors abusing power in their role; they can either make you or break you. It's a who you know, not what you know environment.

    Advice to Management

Trust the talent you hired to do their job! Provide transparency this will earn you trust. Show that care about your employees through actions not words read from a presentation. Be honest and realistic. Give process a chance instead of changing course every other day.
