Pros
Opportunity to prove yourself, and advance your career. This is dependent, though, on your superior. Overall, a good place to work.
Cons
Advancement may be limited, though, within your area of expertise. Beyond that, management is not as keen as they should be to worker morale and other social issues. There is corporate communication, but it often seems too regimented and strained, rather than free, open and genuine.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay attention to personnel, as a whole. Address morale honestly. Address negative events honestly. Address compensation better. Do not strive to pay the median in the field. Draw back some of the formalistic procedures that make it seem like a Dilbert cartoon. Keep pushing for innovation.
Pros
Travel (for some)
Good if you're pro active and don't wait to be told what to do
If you like minimal management involvement ith your work or projects, this place will suit Lyon just fine.
Cons
Since the Blackstone takeover, management have become cut throat and see employees as a commodity.
Draconian and unprofessional HR department (particularly in the UK)
High levels of cronyism and nepotism among senior management.
Long hours with very little appreciation for the effort you put in.
Big blame culture and character assassination rife
Your face has to fit; it can be very difficult to work here if you don't make the right connections
Lots of sales people who feel they rule the world because they make a lot of money
Advice to Senior Management
Get to the bottom of all sides of disputes (although I don't think will be unlikely).
Treat staff equally and fairly
Stop conducting witch hunts.
Employ competent managers who are not just thinking about themselves
Equal out the pay and provide transparent guidelines to the structure and pay grades
Pros
You get a pay check
Cons
Let performance be the factor for advancement. Not your relationship with executives.
Advice to Senior Management
Dont be hidden in your offices. Get out and lead!
Pros
Good pay, good culture, interesting people
Cons
Lots of changes, volatility, questionable decisions at executive level
Advice to Senior Management
Maintain autonomy
Pros
Very casual dress code, good pay for the location, decent benefits package, interesting company to work for and the field is growing.
Cons
Definitely a "good old boys" club of senior management. The finance dept. has definite communication problems and very little feedback is given as to your job performance until your review. Upper management in finance difficult to work for, communication amongst the department is terrible and there is a lot of gossip behind peoples backs. Warsaw itself is a very religious, small conservative town and if you aren't conservative and religious it can be tough to take.
Advice to Senior Management
Communication needs to be improved. There are different standards for upper management and other employees as far as expectations for time in the office, etc. This should be addressed.
Pros
Opportunity for growth and ability to gain responsibility at early stages of one's career on high level projects.
Cons
No longer focused on employee welfare. Marketing management is very ineffective and does not provide guidance or feedback to staff. Negative environment, with new management being very challenging to work under.
Advice to Senior Management
Need to focus on people management. Many are very dissatisfied. Discouraging that such a great company has become such a negative work environment.
Pros
Incredibly relaxed, fun and open work atmosphere. Great job hiring new employees and great opportunities for lateral and vertical movement within the company.
Cons
Not quite as big as their major competitors, Zimmer, Depuy, Stryker and Smith & Nephew, however a much more innovative and socially responsible firm.
Advice to Senior Management
More feedback to employees on a regular basis. More on campus amenities such as a better cafeteria or a fitness room.
Pros
Very good product and reputation. Product managers are approachable and helpful. Training, when you get it, is good. Communication from Corporate to sales reps is good.
Cons
It might be like this with all orthopedics companies, but the opportunity for a sub-rep to increase his/her income is limited. The main sales rep makes a very good living, while the sub-rep does ok. Don't get me wrong. The pay is good relative to many, many other jobs, but the full sales rep makes a killing with commissions.
Advice to Senior Management
Make sure you give adequate training to reps. Yes, most knowledge is acquired on the job, but course training is also helpful.
Pros
It's a job. You can wear shorts to work. Only 2 reasons that I can think of.
Cons
Very political company. Good ole boys club - females are paid considerably less than males. Stock options are given to some, but not all in similiar positions. Biomet has alot of very arrogant people that work there. It's like there is a club and you are in it or not in it. Upper management runs the company like a ma & pa sweat shop with very little interaction, direction, or feedback. For the companies I have worked for since graduating from college, I truely have to say Biomet is lacking good management, low benefits, little respect for people, integrity and a genuine caring attitude. I have never been associated with a company that is so lacking of consistency in rules and regulations from one employee to the next. It is ok for some to do things a certain way...but others not in the club it is not ok. It is very tough to work in an environment where the rules aren't consistent for everyone. There is also an attitude within Biomet that knowledge is power.....so if you have the information no one will share it with you. There is a constant fear and intimidation factor that plays into some employees within the company where they do not want others to be successful out of fear of loosing their own position. It is a very tough environment to be in. If you are up for the challenge then go for it...but my personal advice is stay as far away from this company as possible.
Advice to Senior Management
Show an attitude of appreciation and care that is genuine to your employees. Talk the talk and walk the walk. Mnay employees in the Management, Director, Vice President level need to change. There are truely many individuals that are over their heads in positions they have no idea what they are doing. Someone needs to come into this company and sweep house and move in leaders that lead with Integrity and Respect. Their is an arrogance of protection among those who have never signed non-competes that their jobs are protected. There is also an arrogance among many employees of constant dis-respect in the work place. There is never a place for this in any business environment. To make the record strait I am not referring to Mr. Binder in any of these comments I have made.
Pros
You can get a sense of satisfaction knowing you are helping to provide people with the orthopedic products they need to continue enjoying their life
Cons
Career/Professional development opportunities are not defined nor are managers effectively trained to be good mentors for their employees
Advice to Senior Management
Oversight of middle management is lacking. Managers must be graded effectively for their ability to not only hire and develop talent, but also in how they manage job satisfaction within their teams.
