Decent experience, but could be so much better

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsSmart, fun co-workers. Work-life balance. Company has been profitable for some time.

There are some seriously good managers here, while others are merely okay.

ConsRegular changes in direction frustrate many employees. CEO is pretty much MIA.

Many employees are the "leave at 5 pm" types, which can be frustrating for more motivated team members. Company doesn't really seem like a startup.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management (especially CEO) needs to be more involved in setting company strategy and communicating it to lower-level employees. Need to inspire lower level employees and empower those who feel a sense of ownership.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great people, but weak CEO and lack of vision

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsFun, quirky culture. Smart and talented employees.

ConsNo vision. No diversity. Difficult to grow within the company. Poor-performing employees kept around too long.

Advice to Senior ManagementLearn management skills.

    Run don't walk

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsThe environment is fun, the people are smart. excellent work/life balance.

ConsToo much conflicting direction at the top driven by whims of the board lead to products that shouldn't see the light of day getting green lighted and promising products get shelved. There is too much political jockeying required to move anything forward. Engineering driven org ignores product and UX input. There are career opportunities for engineers but not product or UX.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust your employees and let them do their job. Stop letting Engineering back-seat drive Product. Stop siloing product directives.

    Engineering Co.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThroughout most its life, BitTorrent has focused intensely on building a company of smart, clever, and imaginative engineers that generate new ideas and technologies. Accordingly, you will work with some smart, engaging & unique people.

The culture is very laid back and free in order to foster innovation. There are lots of office perks, activities, good pay/benefits, drinks, food, and games. There's also lots of variety in terms of teams, products and challenges. They've got solid stream of revenue and have experienced a lot of growth recently.

ConsThis is not a well-rounded or mature company. They've hired smart engineers but there are some downsides to a culture structured around innovative engineering:

    - Engineers don't always have the hands-on, nuts-and-bolts experience and social skills to efficiently build high-quality products. They're often focused on the big, clever ideas but don't follow through with a good tight product or experience.

    - Because it's been overshadowed by Engineering, Product has struggled to develop and mature. There's isn't much in terms of product processes, quality standards and vision.

Management has made efforts to improve that situation. Unfortunately, the Sr Managers of Product have little or no experience running and building product teams and don't seem to be making a strong enough impact to drive significant change. I'd hesitate to put all the blame on them though - they are good, smart people. Product has historically been an underdog and the lack of appreciation and trust from others around the company definitely inhibits growth as well.

Working in a rapidly changing environment.
    Free food.
    Friendly people.

    ConsBAD BEER!
Management is Agile; projects are not Agile.
Working in a rapidly changing environment. It's also a con.
Very few opportunities for growth in the company. The non-startup startup.
Lots of incompetent employees - especially outside of engineering.

    A great place to work.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsWith over 120,000,000 *active* users, BitTorrent offers a great opportunity to make a big difference. The company is extremely generous with Salary, bonuses, resources, perks and shwag. The atmosphere is casual and full of interesting people.

ConsProducts are completely design-driven with little regard for technical complexity or platform UI conventions. Shipped products often receive little support. Some managers have very poor leadership skills though others are excellent. Choose your boss carefully and try to hang onto the good ones.

Advice to Senior ManagementGiving designers and developers equal control of designs will foster greater cooperation and help assure more positive product receptions in the market. Try to avoid over-designing products. Instead, start simple and then grow or eliminate products based on metrics and feedback in order to publish earlier and reduce the expense of extensive rework or product failures.

    Working at BitTorrent

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) San Francisco, CA

ProsLots of smart people, fun coworkers, and a great atmosphere. Interesting challenges and lots of opportunities to work on things that very few people have done before.

ConsThe pay was not great, though it was adequate. Projects would get cancelled and reinstated, and sometimes a lot of work would happen for things that never saw the light of day.

Advice to Senior ManagementCurrent management seems to be much better than old management, and they know what they're doing. Basically, they need to hire great people, incentivize them well, and then get out of their way.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend
