    Pros

Black Duck has the most collaborative environment of companies this size. There is no "silo" mentality between departments and there are cross-functional activities and projects going on all the time. It's also very egalitarian - titles mean little here and everyone has access to senior execs, who often sit out in the open area rather than remain cloistered in private offices as in the case in many other companies.
Anyone reading the reviews here will see that it had some very legitimate transitional pains several years ago, but it appears all of the things that used to exasperate employees has been cleared away by the new CEO and executive team and this work environment is nothing like a Dilbert cartoon. People here are truly happy. None of that grumbling and gossiping in the background that kills morale.
The product is exciting, R&D is back on track, and with Open Source software being the hot ticket for almost every software development project, Black Duck is well poised to make and define the open source management market.

    Cons

As a pioneer in a relatively unknown market (open source management), it can be challenging to explain what the heck we do and why customers need it. That will change, but it requires quite of bit of education compared to the typical off the shelf product.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work, never forget to keep the culture positive and authentic, and keep experimenting with small and big things to foster innovation not just in the product, but the company.

    Pros

Black Duck is in a really exciting space. With the increasing adoption of open source, the company is really well positioned to be the "go to" company for all things relating to open source management. Great working environment. Really smart people.

    Cons

Ir appears that there has been a lot of turn over in the past 12 months or so as the company seeks to reinvent itself for a second wave of growth.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course but communicate better.

    Pros

If you are looking for your first or second job out of school, Black Duck Software is a good opportunity for you. If you want to have fun at work and hang out in a cool kitchen while learning about open source and the product, the company has much to offer. Black Duck Software is a training ground for all of various business verticals, no formal anything, employees are empowered to have fun and think of work as a party. Many of the employees are focused on learning on the job and the company supports an unstructured atmosphere of "working on anything you want".

    Cons

If you are looking to learn any real business acumen or apply what you have learned this is not the place for you. The focus on youth, learners and empowering the employees while not having any structure is hard on anyone who wants to move up a level. Any attempt to make the company more structured or a "real company" are met with challenges and immediately dismissed. Many individuals at the company stay for years/decades and do not produce anything other than what they believe in their heads is the greatest technology ever created.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work. The atmosphere is fun and the teams have a great time.

    Pros

Well, they pay you. And the company has been around for some time and seems to be more secure than many other companies of this size. There are some really good people here too.

    Cons

It's a frathouse. From the always-on ESPN in the kitchen, to blaring music in multiple places, to the all-male (with the exception of the HR person) and all-white executive team. Oh, and there's the "generous" vacation policy that says you can take time off when your manager says you can take time off. And there is no minimal number of days guaranteed to you. They tell us such arrangements are all the rage in Silicon Valley, so it's been sprung on us too.

    Advice to Management

Kindly learn the difference between a college dorm and a business.

    Pros

The best reasons to work at Black Duck is for the relaxed (West Coast) atmosphere. The company is approximately 10 years old but still has that start up feel. There is a relaxed dress code along with ping pong tables beer taps and free snacks. There is also an option for a free gym membership at the gym that is on site.
The office has plenty of space and is located right next to the Burlington MA mall that makes lunch and shopping very convenient and the best part is that you don't have to pay for parking!

The company continues to grow and has great products and services for the software industry. Not to mention the great benefit package you get when working here. Black Duck looks after its employees and make sure all their needs are met.

    Cons

Like any job in Massachusetts traffic can be a problem. I95 most of the time is a parking lot but really isn't bad compared to the drive into Boston.

Black Duck Software gives recent college graduates the opportunity to start a career in sales. The training program is extremely valuable and positions you to succeed. The company has a great atmosphere and makes it enjoyable to come to work everyday.

    Cons

Traffic to the office can be difficult.

    Pros

Great start-up, high energy environment. It is a great place especially for young people to start a career in sales and tech/software. A place where hard work is recognized, appreciated and rewarded.
Lots of perks that make coming to work an enjoyable experience.

    Cons

No cons come to mind right away. Commute isn't ideal, but, as a young person, location stills allows you to live almost anywhere i.e. Boston or surrounding areas.

    Advice to Management

Keep going in the same direction!

    Pros

This is a sales-focused company with a start-up feel. Music is playing, ping-pong tables, beer on tap, free snacks and drinks (Redbull as an essential). They train you well and want to see you succeed. I've enjoyed working here thus far and the company's growth keeps me optimistic for my own personal growth within the company! I would and have recommended friends to join the team and they have nothing but great things to say!

    Cons

This is a tough commute if you don't live in the area.
