    Pros

One of the few consumer high tech companies in Canada. Interesting work, relatively progressive management and good culture.

    Cons

The future of BlackBerry is uncertain.

    Advice to Management

John Chen has a good chance of turning things around. Focus is saying no!

    Pros

Genuinely cared about team members, staff. Mike L seemed personally hurt when he had to lay off . Heavy focus on customer.

    Cons

Not invented here syndrome, warring empires during rapid growth and corresponding politics . Need to know (and you don't need to know) culture was frustrating .

    Pros

Well educated workforce, interesting and challenging work.

    Cons

Leadership is completely absent, executive floor has moved to California. New execs are brought in but leadership and communication is still close to zero. Quarterly townhalls with top exec are routinely finished early despite many questions unanswered. ..leaving employees feeling like there is no one on the bridge. Quite discouraging .
Competition is still considered the best way to manage performance, not coaching nor collaboration. The prevailing management style is antiquated and autocratic at best.

    Advice to Management

Communicate. Really, just send an email or two per month. Don't worry about getting sued or appearing to be short on ideas. Just pretend that you care and send a note or two to the footsoldiers in Canada and you will be rewarded.

  6. A high paced interactive team-oriented environment that kept employees happy and motivated.

    Pros

The people. The competitive benefits. The work itself and satisfaction associated with contributing to a greatly loved Canadian product and service.

    Cons

Large organization, some processes took too long and were not efficient, although I hear this has improved.

    Advice to Management

It's all new management. No advice to give yet, till I maybe work there again.

Marketing of product features that were built in were never sold well to customers. This lead to BB having great solutions and products but the everyday consumer not knowing about them

    Pros

Been there for a 8 months co-op. You learn a lot. Everyone gets a work BlackBerry. Lunch outings paid by the company. Ice cream Fridays. They accommodate those (Muslims, etc) who pray regularly during work hours in one of the Waterloo offices

    Cons

For a creative field, would be better to get rid of the office environment to promote collaboration. Don't expect to work there long.
