    Pros

My peers were very talented and knowledgeable. I learned a lot while I was there and there was good opportunity to network.

    Cons

The overall culture was suffering at the time that I was there due to many hardships that the company faced. There were constantly changes being made that had serious impacts on the employees.

    Advice to Management

Understand your place in the market and play to that

    Pros

    - Fast career progression if you work hard and deliver results. - Friendly environment with flexible work hours. - Open to innovation and let you gets your hands dirty and deliver something beautiful. - There are many talented people.

    Cons

    - Round of lay offs caused disengagements in employees and low in moral. - Politics and complains are at the top peak. - Managers are chicken. - Career progress slowed down.

    Advice to Management

After the massive change in senior leadership, it was heading into the right direction, but some of the mid level Managers still have no clues where the company is heading and fail to provide clear direction to their team. Team Leads from many groups do a far more better jobs than those few lazy managers. Some of them got lucky in the past and landed in management role because company was growing fast and their bosses got promoted, not earned by hard work. These are the managers need to go, period. Need more strong managers with strong voice, credibility and know how to run a team and deal with daily issues.

    Pros

Great base salary, benefits and perks. Fantastic opportunity to be exposed with high-end technologies and infrastructure.

    Cons

It took a long time for the company to get back on track again and too many amazing employees were lost when the company went through restructuring.

  8. Good salary, lots of opportunities to learn new things, but too Waterloo-centric and lacked innovation.

    Pros

Despite the current sentiment of the company, working at RIM/BlackBerry was always a conversation starter, benefits were good, salary was good, generally good people to work with

    Cons

Lack of innovation, lack of direction, lack of decision making, too top heavy, upward movement was difficult to attain, too Waterloo-centric (leading back to lack of innovation)

    Advice to Management

Do the opposite of what was done between 2010 and 2013, move the headquarters to (or hire more in) Toronto or Silicon Valley, reduce the number of middle-aged, rural-based developers trying to make product decisions.

    Pros

The company provides comfortable working environment. It still has some great people left. Global company with many locations and "good" reputation.

    Cons

Career killer. My carrier and professional networking slowed to a crawl. There is no hi-tech culture/ feeling in the company. The management did not have a good handle on what is going on in the company. Maybe it will change now.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees. Develop them and keep them challenged. Improve your perks. Create a hi-tech culture.

    Pros

Flexibility is embedded into the culture Despite the company having grown so much, that part of the culture still remains But this depends on the job function too.

    Cons

Market conditions, bad media and layoffs do affect morale

    Advice to Management

I think there has been a lot less politics this year and much clearer focus towards the future.
