    Pros

Most people you work with are pretty decent.
    The industry itself is exciting.
With the right management changes, it could be a great place to work again.

    Cons

Management has been an issue for years with a constant unknown of where the company is going or what is going on at the ground level
New fads are jumped on, constantly reinventing the wheel...
    Doing more with less resources

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think the new management is promising. Keep up with the common sense changes and let's get the company back on track. Don't be reluctant to reorganize entire areas.

    Pros

Young people in the Toronto office
Work on something that people actually use
    Work hours very flexible

    Cons

Company is in a scary state, where people come on go (mostly go). The outlook however does look encouraging. Could pay higher, compared to a tech company.

Former Employee - Software Developer in Toronto, ON (Canada)

    Pros

Since the launch of brand new operation system BlackBerry 10, the company is getting better. Most developers work on the new OS. Also the working atmosphere in the office is great.

    Cons

The company went down in last few years and some customers may feel negative about the company and its products.

  9.

Current Employee - Software Developer in Toronto, ON (Canada)

    Pros

    * There is lots of work to be had. Internal job switching / focus shifting opportunities exist.
    * Great compensation, decent benefits for a manageable workload and flexible hours.
    * New CEO Thorsten Heins is able to recognize and work on important issues of company culture.
    * Since PlayBook / BlackBerry 10, development can also happen on Linux or OS X.
    * Git is getting more popular among teams.

    Cons

    * Substandard test and build system tooling results in too many bugs and frustrated leads.
    * No appreciation for fun in the workplace (foosball? beanbags? game consoles?) or independent learning opportunities (open source participation? hacking days?) outside of your core assignments. Spending a long time at BlackBerry will make you dull and will cut your enthusiasm for technology and greatness in half.
    * Barely any opportunities to work together with unrelated teams without switching jobs internally.
    * A dearth of non-cubicle furniture makes laptop-coding on couches an improbable daydream. (Apparently the office environment issue is being worked on for some Waterloo employees.)
    * Apart from switching responsibilities, the only way to have a "career" in BlackBerry is to get into management. (Apparently this is also being worked on.)
    * Lots of top-down hierarchies cause inefficiencies.
    * Lack of adherence to deadlines or failure to communicate them to non-leads results in a "whatever" attitude towards getting stuff done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to retain outstanding developers instead of catering to the average ones. Flatten hierarchies and allow cross-pollination of teams and ideas during regular work hours. Introduce 20% time, it'll probably make developers more efficient and do wonders for developer morale. Allow and encourage all private (free time) open source contributions, and remove Legal from the process of approving those. Put free snacks and some sort of "fun zone" into every location or floor. Foster small teams working in sprints and get rid of cubicles.
