    Pros

The technology and the pursuit of quality were great reasons to be part of it.

    Cons

Work life balance was poor in my team and teams in the same division.
The company is not doing well, and the outlook is still uncertain.
Values and accountability of senior management were lacking while at the same time employees were constantly lectured about it.

CEO compensation and the goodbye package for the previous CEO didn't seem to be correlated with company performance or the results obtained. Not great for employee engagement and shareholders.

The company seemed to be extremely wasteful.
Insane amount of inventory and even some never used servers were just shredded.

    Advice to Management

I found the direction to be clear for projects and technology but not for the business as a whole.
The feedback loop from the employee to management seemed to be broken.

    Pros

BlackBerry has a very good benefits and RRSP plan available for all employees. During the Christmas time everyone has extra paid days off.

    Cons

Poor marketing strategy ( for example not enough advertising new product).

  3. Enjoyable place to work, plenty of opportunities to learn new things.

    Pros

Great team (I'm sure your mileage will vary), opportunity to work with new and exciting technology, and most importantly the ability to learn new things (on your own and from your coworkers).

    Cons

Perceived by many as a dying company.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing; my managers treated me well.

    Pros

BlackBerry is an exciting place to work and still somewhat iconic in Canada. The people there are as passionate about BB as any place I've ever worked.

    Cons

Even with all the changes in the past few years, the culture is still broken. Anyone in a leadership role who has been there more than 8-10 years should be looked at as part of the problem, because there are still too many who aren't part of the solution. There is too much focus on short term achievement and not enough real leadership, despite the new top level that John Chen has brought in. In another couple years, if they keep cleaning house and focus on delivering what the customers want, it could be a good place to work. For now, stay away.

    Advice to Management

Keep cleaning house and don't buy into the nonsense that the technology requires the 10-15 year service employees to operate. Many of them are responsible for the mess. Remember, "you cannot solve a problem from within the same consciousness that created the problem".

    Pros

BlackBerry encouraged growth and development. I was given one on one coaching with an assigned mentor/manager on a weekly basis. The people were enthusiastic and mostly motivated to grow in their career.

    Cons

Dealing with multiple systems which were not well integrated, which made it hard to report or get information on a timely basis,

    Advice to Management

Employee motivation is key during hard times, so anything to boost morale would help in bringing the people together.

    Pros

The company provided excellent benefits and pay. They provided a flexible work structure and were more focused on results vs keeping tabs on you. The people I worked with were great.

    Cons

Lack of advancement options in recent years was a drawback. Obviously this was tied to a lot of the re-structuring associated with re-positioning the company for success.

    Advice to Management

Focus on developing structured career advancement options for employees as a way of retaining talent. Perhaps develop a program clearly helps employees understand what steps they need to take to move up in the organization.

    Pros

Well educated workforce, interesting and challenging work.

    Cons

Leadership is completely absent, executive floor has moved to California. New execs are brought in but leadership and communication is still close to zero. Quarterly townhalls with top exec are routinely finished early despite many questions unanswered. ..leaving employees feeling like there is no one on the bridge. Quite discouraging .
Competition is still considered the best way to manage performance, not coaching nor collaboration. The prevailing management style is antiquated and autocratic at best.

    Advice to Management

Communicate. Really, just send an email or two per month. Don't worry about getting sued or appearing to be short on ideas. Just pretend that you care and send a note or two to the footsoldiers in Canada and you will be rewarded.
