I worked at BlackRock as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Gorgeous offices, great (if confusing) technology

    Cons

No privacy, everyone sits at long tables. People are unfriendly to newcomers. Their technology systems are staggerly complex, and it often takes more than a week to get a phone set up, have a simple distribution list created and gain access to their travel and expense system. They also tend to hire contract employees, some of whom have been there for years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would keep a close eye on your managers. The way people are treated is very unkind.

I worked at BlackRock full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

normal working hours, few global calls, company is located in the financial district downtown SF. Always something happening around the area.

    Cons

professional development is limited if you're not in sales. Pretty siloed into your own org and work.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good company, leader in Asset Management and Finance Industry. Very well established. Business leaders are very knowledgable, and experts in their areas.

    Cons

No career growth and no leadership opportunities, if located in San Francisco. Actually career goes downhill.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Act as a true global company. Distribute management and expand in strategic locations. Provide career opportunities in these locations, not only in NYC. BlackRock acquired BGI. Not only great business acquisition, but also great talent and skills.

    Pros

    Very smart people. Progressive CEO.

    Cons

Lots and lots of steering committees, making it a very tough place to innovate.
Policy is to do regular layoffs.

I have been working at BlackRock full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very technology focused with a lot of opportunity to learn and build a career. It takes a lot of justification but if budget can be justified money will be spent on technology

    Cons

Long hours, no work-life balance. There's a strong expectation for employees to devote everything to the company with no regard for family or personal interests

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Realize your employees have families and lives outside of work

If your about face time, incompetence, and politics...left firm for significantly less branded firm and got better pay!

I worked at BlackRock full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Brand, brand, brand...and well, brand.

    Cons

Everything else...firm has very generic products that it touts as 'unique', the promotion process is based on weekend golf trips, and no real clear career path, mostly dogmatic middle management and quite frankly, your skills atrophy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit promoting based on who you hang out with outside of work or who reminds you of you, look at actual delivery (fairly simple concept right?), and don't assume facetime = productivity...the more senior the less production, generally speaking anything VP onwards indicates nothing

I worked at BlackRock full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Many smart, nice, "fire in the belly" folks remain in San Francisco, but the BGI days are long gone.
Work-life balance is ok, but I was never a PAG analyst.
    Adequate health/vacation/401k benefits.

    Cons

    - Perl is considered strategic. cgi-bin is a plus.
    - Many critical C++ systems were written 10-15 years ago, and those developers are now the senior IT management cadre. Good luck attempting a critique of current systems.
    - Essentially impossible to add a column to a database table, so ad-hoc name-val structures are pressed into service in preference to relational schema evolution.
    - 1-3% annual salary increase
    - NYC management arguably inferior to the former SF/BGI management.
    - Lame Christmas parties, consisting of beer/wine/finger food, at the office, 4-6pm. The lack of humor is dispiriting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You shouldn't write off the former BGI employees. And remember, you're an IT shop with a banking license.
