    Pros

The college community is small enough you really can make a difference with your work. Everyone is very polite and the campus as a whole has a very welcoming atmosphere. One on one interaction between students, workers, and professors is a huge plus.
The work program, overall, provides one with valuable experience.

    Cons

Management can be extremely poor both in judgement and allocation of resources. Blackburn tends to allocate lots of resources where they shouldn't go and none where they should. Institutional knowledge is lacking and can make working for Blackburn very inefficient because of high worker rollover and poor documentation of processes. Work-Life balance is hellish because work often gets in the way of study time and social time, all of which are very necessary. Don't expect a whole lot of sleep as a student worker if you have a challenging major!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Document, Document, DOCUMENT. Keep the accomplishments of past workers around and have future workers exploit it.

    Pros

You can get to know the people at the school

    Cons

There are a lot of failings in the school's system. I've gotten many reports that I was good to go for the next school year only to find out there was more I needed to do.

    Recommends
    Negative Outlook

    Pros

The work is easy if you're willing to do it and you're pretty much guaranteed a job as a student.

    Cons

The jobs that too many students want pays the same as the jobs that students get forced to work in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase the pay of the less popular jobs to decrease the overabundance of students wanting to do the other jobs.

    Pros

Small college, Location between two major cities, yet still rural. Faculty and staff gt along with one another. Small classes and many dedicated professors.

    Cons

Finances are very bad, no raises even cost of living raises are absent. Regularly increasing costs of benefit copays while salaries effectively diminish. Overall, the administration leadership is very weak.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-evaluate the focus and goals. Reliance on it being a work college and failing to seriously encourage higher standards damages the reputation of the college. When colleges that are more remote and have similar resources can significantly improve while Blackburn has a better location andpopulation to draw from shrinks significantly suggests the leadership is doing something powerfully wrong.

    Pros

Some great co-workers. Excellent gallows humor. Parking is free. The students are wonderful, and it's a work college so your staff will be students.

    Cons

Constant budget cuts, to the bone and beyond. Furloughs, benefit cost increases and having to supply your students out of your own pocket (like your own copy paper, furniture, pens, software, etc.) mean it's harder to get by year after year. Look at the tax returns - upper management salaries have increased 30-40% as faculty and staff are frozen or cut. Way too many mandatory meetings with no results. Lip service to shared management, but it all comes down to what the provost and president want.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the millions of committees you've set up. And stop the preferential treatment for people who don't perform; their failure makes it harder for the rest of us to pick up the slack.
