I worked at Blackhawk Network as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

The positive points I could think about this company are the only things that kept me going through my time here. I had the opportunity to work with some of the nicest people around also had the opportunity for having some of the best conversations over the lunch with people from different teams.

    Cons

I would personally not take part in any of the office politics but when your leads are involved, you are most likely to get roped in as well. Working on the weekends is a very common thing and is felt as a part of the working culture here. Unrealistic strict deadlines, poor release cycle processes e.g. sometimes testing code in Prod., unclear role boundaries especially when people from BU would start coding, creating defects left, right and center are some of the other things that come to my mind. School like rules - get in before 9.00 am, no playing ping pong before 5.00 pm are some of the guidelines often sent by the directors to their teams who are treated sometimes as peasants. There is little or no respect for developers. The seating is also somewhat like as in school. 4-5 people cramped in one row of desk divisions. This company is good for anyone who is badly in need of a job, but as and when people gain 1-2 yrs of experience they tend to leave due to frustrating reasons mentioned above. If you would like to experience the movie 'Office Space' in real life, this is the place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Simple rule, treat others as you would like yourself to be treated. Believing in your employees is more important than you would think. Threat and rank pulling are not the methods of motivation.

I worked at Blackhawk Network full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good location... some very smart employees... (i wonder why they're staying there)

    Cons

    1) A lot of stup1d/clueless employees. This is because the Management forced the hiring Managers to hire warm bodies so whoever gets in the door can get the job no matter how dum8 the person is.
    2) The CF0 manges the CT0 and Ci0... on a company that is solely dependent on IT Services, budget is not being spent well.
    3) Too much politics.
    4) The Infrastructure Operations is very incompetent except for a few.
    5) No chance for promotion or raise unless you know someone from higher Management.
    6) Bad compensation overall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat your people well... they are the ones making money for Blackhawk. One of these days someone will sue the company for not paying OT for employees that are forced to work overtime.

    Cons

This is the only company I worked every single project start and end in war room, crazy work hours. Slavery in new form. Office space is really funny like 10 people in 5 seater car No benefits for hard working. Everything is POLITICS here
Top management is completely waste starting from Directors. No one is qualified

    Pros

    Good Location
    Good business model
    Money back up from Safeway

    Cons

Please stay from this company if you are professional. IT executives are not qualified to run the business. No process, things are getting done forcefully or by threating. There is no life work balance

I worked at Blackhawk Network full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Fairly small company, some opportunity to advance with extra effort
    Decent benefits
    Average salary
Below top management, the people are tremendous

    Cons

    Pretty political
    Management is not very decisive
Strategic planning could be much better
Mid-level managers and below are under-appreciated

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    This is for top management:
Find expertise in current and emerging technologies - you don't have it now.
Look to your assets in mid-level management and below to foster innovation.
Asses your R&D spending to maximize the results.

I worked at Blackhawk Network full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The company is situated in a convenient location.

    Cons

The turnover there is incredible particularly in the IT/engineering groups and Accounting. The number of people leaving the company without a job is astonishing. For 95% of the people there, the workload is HUGE, compensation is a joke and the working conditions are horrendous (they've implemented bench seating...it's like working on a fully occupied picnic table).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Running a business includes knowing how to treat your employees.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good Business, Great Idea, Backed by Safeway

    Cons

Worst place to work for, especially the Technology group. Bunch of dumbheads managing the technology group, who thinks they are the best in the industry after Steve Jobs but don't have a clue on what to do in their role. They make your life miserable in their struggle to fit in their role by trying out crazy ideas and playing dirty politics.
Seriously don't know where do they hire these morons from...
You will see managers, who tries to take respect by force from the team and take credit for your hard work. As if they have an internal fraternity and all the team members will have to be subjected to their hazing to continue in work.
I am taking the next offer that I am getting and moving out of here.. Any other offer is better than this...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In bay area, where you have so many good managers, who proved themselves, as senior managers and chiefs, in good technology firms in silicon valley, how do you manage to hire a bunch of morons to manage the technology group. Start up companies manage to poach senior managers from tech giants like google, apple, Ebay, MS,....

Seriously get some good senior managers, who know their job to manage technology. You can save the company from a lawsuit (like groupon...)

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Most Sr. Management positions & above work hard sometimes & get payed well. Everything beneath that level works 5x's as hard but never sees returns for their efforts (AKA the Proletariat). A great company for college grads who need work experience & plan to move on after 2-3 years.

    Cons

The HR department is completely non-existant. This company works like a startup but is no longer a startup (in business for 10+ years). Blackhawk Network is not the company to work for if you are looking for career advancement opportunities that entail salary increases of 3.5% or better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage additional education and training for all levels, especially HR, Sr.Management and above.

I have been working at Blackhawk Network full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The gift card industry is growing and it is an exiting opportunity to be a part of. There are many people trying to do great things here.

    Cons

Senior management needs to recognize their employees for all the great things they do and stop treating their employees like robots.

There is no real work/life balance here. Senior management prefers to strain every ounce of time out of their employees without regard for their personal lives.

The pay is way below market and don't expect raises above 2% because unless you're senior management, you will not get anything higher than that.

Too much smoke and too many mirrors here. Senior management makes too many promises and never delivers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management needs to take a long hard look at the overall morale of their employees and realize that a simple "thank you" can go a long way from time to time. Don't take people for granted because without people, the company is nothing.
