Great Benefits ( 15% discount and free rentals)
Easy Going
Co-Workers became a family
You get to know your regular customers quite well
Cons
Pay doesn't increase very often.
Some customers will complain just to complain.
Advice to Senior Management
Take the advice of some of the people who work there every day about how they think customers will react to new programs and specials
Pros
good technology to work with
Cons
financial troubles limits my future with the company
Advice to Senior Management
get with with the times
Pros
Benefits, Co Workers(met some of my best friends)
Cons
Dying company, unrealistic sales goals
Advice to Senior Management
In its hayday, great chance opportunites for advancement. Now struggling to keep store open
Pros
Good support from my District Manager
Cons
Requirements of Store Managers is ridiculous. Corporate does not support Stores well.
Pros
Very flexible schedule great for school. Typically young fun coworkers
Cons
Late closings, work all weekends, too much expected for such little pay
Advice to Senior Management
Get your act together and run the company correctly
Pros
More free rentals than you'll ever need, flexible scheduling, fun place to work, get to talk about movies/games, usually have pretty enjoyable colleagues, not stressful at all, work usually goes by fairly fast, watch movies at work.
Cons
Customers can be annoying, asking for the same movie 100 times a night the first weekend it's out, laying movies on your side of the counter when you're not ready, spitting out their phone number and address when all you need is their license, sometimes regional/corporate imposes ridiculous sales goals on store-level management, on your feet all night.
Say you're selling the movie pass and you have goals, well if you sell 12 in one day, that's 12 people that will probably be in the store the next day that you absolutely cannot sell the pass to because they already have it. But management seems to tacitly accept that most sales goals are absurd; just play the game.
Advice to Senior Management
Instead of giving away rentals left and right hoping to sell overpriced candy and drinks, how about discontinuing some of the magazines and electronics items that NEVER sell and improve rental selection?
Pros
DISH owns blockbuster video now and there have been a lot of changes. Some positive and some not so much.
Cons
benefits are the worst I have ever had. i pay for dental I can not use for a whole year
Pros
They offer free rentals so you can give immediate reviews of movies and a generally flexible schedule. It's a fun place to work when you're helping customers and giving advice to people about movies, music, and games.
Cons
Their antiquated POS system really is a POS. It was such as slow and complicated checkout process that even with 3 POS systems running, a line 10 customers long would form. Using just the internet, I could process the rentals online and print out the receipt MUCH faster than the overly complicated dinosaur POS system they use.
Also the staff facilities were some of the worst I have ever experienced and I previously worked in a dirty warehouse. They often stored merchandise in the restroom and the stores were so constantly short-staffed that on busy nights you couldn't even take a bathroom break, much less go out onto the floor while merchandise was being shoplifted right in front of you.
When will retail organizations learn that customers don't like MERCH being PUSHED on them? And that customers can do self-checkout, I the same thing to my DM and Store Manager even so far back as 1999 when I first started working there.
Advice to Senior Management
Reset you entire organization from the ground up. Get with the NOW, destroy all the old ideas that are holding you back. I told my DM in 1999 that someone was going to setup a Vending Machine operation and DESTROY you. Her response was, "Gosh I hope not." That told me that she knew the ideas was a great one and that YOU didn't see it. That is a major failing of the entire US Organizational Infrastructure, failing to listen to those individual with Boots on the Ground. We in the Trenches can see from a perspective that you lack, but more than that, trying new ideas quickly, to see what works.
Here's a question: Why didn't Blockbuster try out Vending Machine Movie rentals YEARS ago???
You were the market leader for YEARS! You're down but not out. America loves the underdog, reset your organization, find a new marketing method that works, capitalize on your strengths, get rid of the dogma of corporate thinking that entrenches bad ideas and blocks new interesting ideas, and LISTEN to individuals on the ground, maybe form a department specifically for analyzing and testing out new ideas, why not? If they come up with only one new great idea per 10 years, and that idea makes MILLIONS, then they're worth it.
America's edge is Innovation, the market is MOVING FAST, you had better get your feet under you can start innovating as rapidly as the market is moving or soon you'll be just be a memory.
Here's a Do Not: DO NOT listen to stodgy consultants that tickle your ears with what you want to hear, find people who will tell you the Truth good or bad, who have great ideas and know how to help your organization be great again.
Pros
The free rentals or movies and video games as well as the opportunity to see movies before the general public. Talking movies and videos games with customers.
Cons
Pay isnt very good considering all the responsibilties, the POS is ancient. Corporate keeps changing policies so often even the employees don't know them. Failing business system, hearing people complain about late fees and prices.
Advice to Senior Management
Treat employees better stop worrying so much about selling extras and focus more on proactive customer service.
Pros
- Free rentals
- Chilled out work environment
- in my case, good co-workers
- Good benefits
Cons
- Out dated methods
- Management pressuring the CSR's to sell items
- Complicated applying process
- The job itself is easy, but dealing with your manager is tough
Advice to Senior Management
Get talented young enthusiastic people on your team. Your hiring methods and work plans are like something from the 80's. Try to make your store a refreshing experience for the customers. don't pressure your CSR's, let them be themselves and be friendly with the customers. Host events, activities, and store specials. If you wanna win the game you gotta learn the rules and play it.
