Pros
Cool Co-workers, and I enjoyed the free rentals and the customers were nice, and the hours were very flexible.
Cons
The franchise hired district managers were very mean and not in touch with the employees and looked down on them.
Advice to Senior Management
I would fire the district managers they have horrible attitudes and some times they do not even speak to the employees.
Pros
Free rentals and extra discounts during holidays
Cons
Pay is awful and not fair
Advice to Senior Management
Stop micromanaging everything!!!!
Pros
Surrounded by lots of movies
Cons
Redundant paperwork, low pay, and no praise for a job well done.
Advice to Senior Management
Each town is different and each store manager knows his or her customers. Allow them to be flexible with some of the rules instead of them being written in stone. Also, if moving into a small town, listen to the manager about the town and pay him in line with other managers. The town may be smaller in size but the work is the same.
Pros
Compensation if you are a hard worker
Cons
I always felt degraded and unappreciated
Lack of Communication between upper management and staff
Constant Change and always felt incompetent
Advice to Senior Management
Change the style of Management and appreciate the people that are working hard instead of focusing on the people that don't. They will eventually get weeded out so stop giving the deadbeats so much attention and effort!
Pros
Movie lovers will love this job. If you hire the right crew it can actually be fun. Some of the customers are pretty cool.
Cons
There is really no chance for advancement, or for salary reviews. Company policies could be more relevant to what happens in the real world.
Advice to Senior Management
Talk to your managers more. Have a gameplan that plays to the company's strengths. Don't try to be something you're not.
Pros
They have some perks for part timers if you stay for a year or more. Employees get five free rentals every week.
Cons
Poor management, low pay, employee morale was generally low, many unsatisfied customers because of high prices.
Pros
Being around a lot of interesting people, free movie and game rentals, variety of shifts available
Cons
Very hard to move up in the company, very little job recognition, more criticism of how you're doing than acknowledgment of the good. Unrealistic sales goals. Very hard to get time off on weekends, store manager expects to have every weekend off so asm is expected to work every weekend.
Advice to Senior Management
Better structuring of required shifts for store managers to work, how can they judge how to schedual for shifts or set sales goals for them if they have never worked the same shift? More acknowledgment of the small things that employees do on a regular basis to keep the stores going
Pros
Enjoyable work atmosphere when outside management isn't harassing you about things you can barely control. Great to be able to talk about movies and games as a job.
Cons
No respect from upper management. They always change policies in ways that make little sense to an actual employee who understands how a store really works. Almost no room for advancement since the company is shrinking. Poor pay.
Advice to Senior Management
Have a little respect for the people who are actually doing the job of serving the customers. Most of you have no idea how a store actually works and quite frankly the company would be doing itself a huge favor by eliminating so much middle management. The district managers and regional managers do not have an impact, at least not a positive one, on anything that matters at the store level, yet they make more than an entire staff combined.
Pros
Great team that I worked with. The eviornment of the business dictated a lot of stress on everyone, but my team was great to work with.
Cons
Lack of communication, absolutely no respect of senior leadership. Seemed they just sat and watched the company demise.
Pros
Blockbuster was a fun experience for working with customers and great staff. You're able to rent movies and games for free, with some coming before the street date. The company seems to be moving in a better direction that it was previously.
Cons
You have to sell - and you get "talked to" if you don't. Ultimately, it depends on the RDO and DM. If you have a terrible one, you're stuck with them and your life will suck. You have a good one, you're in for a good time. The connection between Corporate and the stores is sharp. Corporate does care, they just don't know how to act. So they leave it for RDOs and DMs and it becomes disjointed.
Advice to Senior Management
The Employee Council is great, and you're moving in the right direction. But find a way to hold DMs and RDOs accountable not just for numbers, but for how they treat their employees.
