Pros
They have good management training programs. If your fairly smart and very dedicated you can be promoted to store manager fairly quickly.
Cons
Corporate sets crazy goals for us hit but doesn't back us up with the support we need to achieve them. Communication can be contradictory at times. Ends up being lots of double work due to upper management decisions.
Advice to Senior Management
When looking to streamline operations seek advice from those who actually run the business. Listen to your ground troops. We have the customer interaction and the knowledge of what changes can be made to boost revenue and slim down our bottom line.
Pros
Lots of areas to streamline processes.
Cons
Things change so quickly it is hard to keep up
Pros
They have some perks for part timers if you stay for a year or more. Employees get five free rentals every week.
Cons
Poor management, low pay, employee morale was generally low, many unsatisfied customers because of high prices.
Pros
If you like movies it is a good place to work
Cons
Things change from day to day. Rollercoaster
Advice to Senior Management
Keep good employees
Pros
Being around a lot of interesting people, free movie and game rentals, variety of shifts available
Cons
Very hard to move up in the company, very little job recognition, more criticism of how you're doing than acknowledgment of the good. Unrealistic sales goals. Very hard to get time off on weekends, store manager expects to have every weekend off so asm is expected to work every weekend.
Advice to Senior Management
Better structuring of required shifts for store managers to work, how can they judge how to schedual for shifts or set sales goals for them if they have never worked the same shift? More acknowledgment of the small things that employees do on a regular basis to keep the stores going
Pros
The team is awesome. I've worked for Blockbuster for many years and it has been great. I've learned so much and the experience I've gained is invaluable.
Cons
There really wasn't a downside until the bankruptcy and the sell to Dish. Dish benefits are horrible. The amount of vacation time I earn has decreased, the medical plan has an extremely high deductible and there are no copays. The employee pays all expenses until the deductible is met. Dish is not an employee friendly employer.
Pros
-Very customer interaction driven
-Fairly easy
-Free movies and Games
Blockbuster varies so much from store to store you have a chance to find a great place to work that is one of the best accommodations for college students. They allow part-time managers so even part time employees have a chance to move up.
Cons
-Paranoid work environment
-Always looking over your shoulder
-Impossible sales goals
-Little Job security
You need to be able to deal with the stress of not being trusted at all and constantly looking over your shoulder for some sneak visit to catch you doing something wrong. Prepare to become paranoid of everyone that walks in the door. The upper management (district and regional) are so divorced from reality I'm not even sure they know what company they work for or what Blockbuster is about. Also nothing in this company stays the same, policies change often and usually make no sense.
Advice to Senior Management
Please show some continuity between policies and do not change so often as it is killing customer relations. Have some faith in your employees and don't treat them like they are guilty constantly. However on the store levels you guys are awesome and keep up the good work.
Pros
Cool Co-workers, and I enjoyed the free rentals and the customers were nice, and the hours were very flexible.
Cons
The franchise hired district managers were very mean and not in touch with the employees and looked down on them.
Advice to Senior Management
I would fire the district managers they have horrible attitudes and some times they do not even speak to the employees.
Pros
Surrounded by lots of movies
Cons
Redundant paperwork, low pay, and no praise for a job well done.
Advice to Senior Management
Each town is different and each store manager knows his or her customers. Allow them to be flexible with some of the rules instead of them being written in stone. Also, if moving into a small town, listen to the manager about the town and pay him in line with other managers. The town may be smaller in size but the work is the same.
Pros
Compensation if you are a hard worker
Cons
I always felt degraded and unappreciated
Lack of Communication between upper management and staff
Constant Change and always felt incompetent
Advice to Senior Management
Change the style of Management and appreciate the people that are working hard instead of focusing on the people that don't. They will eventually get weeded out so stop giving the deadbeats so much attention and effort!
