Pros
The former glory of Blockbuster is gone, but the culture is still fun.
Cons
DISH is cheap. A number of business decisions appear to be based on quantity not quality.
Pros
Free rentals
There won't be a lot of times where you get stressed out
Cons
Gets really boring sometimes
the pay is bare minimum
The place I worked at was dusty and kinda dirty
Pros
Cameraderie amongst most employees and store managers. Free movies weekly to rent, decent discount.
Cons
Managers were required to answer RIDICULOUS number of text messages on off hours making them "on-call" to the point where a company mandate went out saying that managers could not be contacted unless it was an emergency. Company changed it goals and initiatives quarterly causing managers to COMPLETELY re-merchandise the store on a moments notice. Was fun during the good times when company was strong and a nightmare the last year and a half.
Advice to Senior Management
Stop throwing mud at the wall hoping it will stick. Stop trying to re-invent the wheel every month.
Pros
movies and games candy and popcorn
Cons
work load and stress level high but fun
Advice to Senior Management
listen to your people more
Pros
Customer service can be a rewarding experience. Being able to view movies before release dates are a perk.
Cons
Career progression is extremely slow. Pay is not great...could not support a family on the income.
Advice to Senior Management
STOP changing stuff!! Pick a direction for the company and stick to it! STOP closing profitable stores! PAY THE RENT!!! It SUCKS not knowing whether or not I'll have a job tomorrow because the rent for the building hasn't been paid. It also sucks when I'm at work and the electricity is cut off because the bill hasn't been paid...TWICE! You are messing with people's lives! Make a decision for where this company is headed.
Pros
Great fun
Loads of free rentals
You gain lots of knowledge on films and tv
Flexible with shifts and pay more on bank holidays
Great if you're a student or need a part time job as they do evening shifts
Great for meeting like minded people
Cons
Pay is quite low
Hours are in shifts
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up the good communication about the business strategy
Pros
Always getting to see movies before they were released on dvd/blu ray, you get a discount on new and used merchandise, and you get to rent movies and games for free.
Cons
I was part time because I was in college and I have difficulties with the manager over only being able to work on the weekends, which I made clear would be the case when I was hired. They were very hard to get a set weekly schedule.
Advice to Senior Management
If you follow customers around and try to sell them things the entire time they are in the store, they will get uncomfortable and leave, or they will get annoyed and not be interested in purchasing any promotions.
Pros
Free movies and game rentals
Cons
Job security and pay is low
Advice to Senior Management
Leave! The ship has sailed and in now rapidly sinking! All stores in my opinion will be closing soon
Pros
-Free Movie rentals (10 per week)
-Discounts on purchases (20% off)
-Great training program! Blockbuster invested over three months to each new hire (manager) trainging (maybe that's why they're going out of business). They really make crystal clear what they expect from you as a leader and staff member.
-Friendly and supportive work atmosphere
-Great place to learn the ropes of a harsh retail enviroment/career
Cons
-Expects the store sales team to do what a marketing teams' job should be
-Unrealistic goals and expectations--Sell 50 rewards cards, eventhough you only have 10 customers walking in.
-Poor compensation
-No transparency to the future of the company, hence the livelyhood of it's employees
-Exploitative mindset from leadership--"do whatever it takes to save this company, even if it means overlooking the best interest of its team"
-Revolving door for senior leadership
Advice to Senior Management
-Tell the truth
-Sucess as a business comes form prioritizing these three things: People, Service and Sales (in the same order and they come in the same order as well!)
-Your people are your backbone and if you break their backs, you are breaking your own...
Pros
The benefits package was really good when I was an employee. They also had tuition reimbursement. I wish I was able to take advantage of that.
Cons
Sometimes the managers would put too many employees on the schedule which would force them to look busy. Some of the not so fun tasks included walking around the store offering the mail service, which I did not understand since customers were already in the store.
Advice to Senior Management
The management at Blockbuster was acceptable. Although I was an employee for a short amount of time, I could tell that management had adequate skills for the position.
