I worked at Blockbuster part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The atmosphere and staff were great! I got to learn a lot about retail in a friendly, nurturing environment and discuss topics that were very interesting to me and relevant to the position.

    Cons

The only issue with Blockbuster is that they were phased out by more innovative companies and their pay for this position was not great, though to be fair, that should be expected when applying for this role.

    Advice to Management

Would have tried to capitalize on your branding by going digital much earlier in the game. I would have decreased the size of the stores and tried to increase the customer support presence online.

    Pros

Free movie rentals, free game rentals, pretty relaxed environment, customers tend to be in a good mood

    Cons

You're gonna make minimum wage and odds are your store will close down. I can't believe it hasn't already

    Advice to Management

Make the store into something completely different, obviously the current business model isn't working

    Pros

Allowance of free rentals for employees. Co-workers were a tight knit group, and typically accommodating. Customer attitudes vary by area, but if you can talk movies or games at all you'll be all right.

    Cons

Pressure to up-sell became overbearing once Dish bought the company. All transactions were geared towards selling candy and Dish subscriptions. Sales is sales, but it felt off in some way. A lot of cut hours and reduced wages after the buy-out, too.

    Advice to Management

Good luck with Dish or in whatever your next career was. Despite the end of it, I did meet a lot of great people during my time at Blockbuster, and I'm happy to have worked there.

    I worked at Blockbuster full-time

    Pros

It was like any other retail job. Sell, sell sell. Hours were convenient while I was finishing my degree. It was not a tough job. It didn't require much thinking.

    Cons

The raises were a joke. I got a 5 cent raise one. Hardly any bonuses. I got a dvd as a Christmas bonus 3 years in a row.

    Advice to Management

I guess it doesn't really matter what advice there is to give since Blockbuster no longer exists.
