  1. Infospace is a Nice Place but Morphing Quickly

    Pros

Infospace is a wholly-owned subsidary of Blucora. My review is limited to them. The company provides good benefits and a very reasonable management structure. The work is mostly .NET and C#. The servers are all in AWS and so it is a good place to see and work with a cloud-based company.

    Cons

The industry that Infospace (SEM) is in is changing rapidly and Google is forcing some of this change. Infospace still needs to see that its new initiatives will be sufficiently successful to carry the company through the decade.

    Advice to Management

The organization is nimble and working hard. However, the company needs timely business feedback to hit the right niche which will return stability to the enterprise.

I worked at Blucora full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits package Flexible hours Can be a fun place to work when bad decisions aren't making the job harder than necessary

    Cons

IT company that views IT operations as a money hole No respect for people who keep the doors open If you aren't a Dev you don't matter Little to no opportunity for advancement; too busy laying off every 3-6 months

    Advice to Management

Remember that all departments have their purpose and that without each one fulfilling that role, you're bound to fail as it appears you are on the way toward.

  3. Flexible and Fun

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, smart & creative colleagues, free soda, paid parking or transit pass, gym and cell phone subsidy, casual work environment

    Cons

Few new products available to customers, no clear direction from leadership, and a shrinking book of business. Also a lack of internal SLAs can make it hard to get things done internally.

    Advice to Management

Communicate the direction of the company more clearly and work to create more transparency between leadership and staff. Be more open with your plans.

    Pros

Good work life balance. Excellent coworker, generally competent and not much if any politics.

    Cons

A very dynamic workplace (new initiatives, changes in direction, etc...) That could be good or bad, depending on you.

I have been working at Blucora full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have loved the Infospace / Blucora culture for more than 10 years of working with this company. Like any company, changes have come and gone. Ideas have been tried and some of them have failed but it has remained a great place in which to be a team member. Lots of perks! Great insurance and dental. Of course, there are free drinks (great espresso / coffee drinks , milks, pop, juices). We have a wonderful vending system with fresh and packaged foods in open racks so you can touch and read labels, etc. before buying. Close to great urban features and restaurants. Parking is paid if you want to drive.

    Cons

With changes, management frequently changes direction and this can mean dynamic shifts to staffing.

    Pros

Pros of Blucora are that they do reward the positive contributions of their employees and many of the departments are close knit.

    Cons

Training was lacking and there were some minor work life balance issues, but that was due mainly to growth.

    Pros

Great work-life balance Solid benefits and perks Significant effort put into employee appreciation programs Laid back, relaxed work environment

    Cons

Leadership seems risk-averse and lacks accountability Not especially innovative or cutting edge technology Difficult to get resources, training and support for new initiatives Brand/Reputation makes it difficult to attract top-tier talent

    Advice to Management

Refresh the leadership team. Identify and leverage the company's core strengths to create something new instead of spending time and effort playing catch up in an already crowded space.

I have been working at Blucora full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people at this company are great. They make the job fun. You may not command as large of a salary as you would at a bigger company like Amazon or Microsoft, but if you seek work-life balance this is a great place to work as a software engineer.

    Cons

Sometimes the work can be a bit dull/tedious. Pay is not as high as some other software companies. The product is a bit difficult to get excited about - just have to be excited about creating interesting solutions to problems you are presented.

    Advice to Management

Keep bringing in great people. They will keep making this company a fun place to work.

I have been working at Blucora full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Infospace is a very mature company that is flexible and trusting of its employees. There's a lot of room to try new things and take your own approach.

    Cons

The lack of intensity is sometimes frustrating if when you want to get something done, especially on a deadline.

    Advice to Management

The president seems to be taking care of every piece of advise I would have asked for a few months ago, but it's too soon to tell how successful it will be.
