I worked at Blue Canopy full-time

    Pros

Good pay and bonuses. Plenty of work in the federal gov't consulting space.

    Cons

Hard to get them to approve training - they wanted you to use your vacation days to do training that would directly benefit your work at the company.

Not a lot of opportunity outside of the federal consulting space. Once you are on one client, hard to get any work on another one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more benefits and perks to employees.

I have been working at Blue Canopy

    Pros

The offices in Reston seemed to be Class A. Now I know where the rest of my salary went...

    Cons

Horrible continuing education polocies. No genuine encouragement to grow indivudial knowledge. Employees are required to use PTO when attending conferences, multi-day traings etc. There is no reward for cerification achievement. The company seems to have a high amount of "industry jumpers", who are fluent in industry buzz words and catch pharses. The company itself promotes mid managers describing people as "seasoned" or "technical" Both extremely vague and non descript. Recruting will tell you anything to get you through the door.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend more time actually knowing your real "worker bees". The mid managers do a bad job of facilitating and developing corporate methodology for meeting client needs. Mid- managers should be more versed with manageing work, and not so much focus on manageing people.... (A clear indicator of new and untrained managers)

    Pros

Occasionally wins contracts with large numbers of positions. Benefits are fairly good.

    Cons

No training opportunities for employees working on site. Limited career mentoring.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the rank and file and not just those working in upper management. Tell the truth about position locations, training options, growth opportunities before hiring a new employee.

I have been working at Blue Canopy full-time

    Pros

This company has bent over backwards to help ensure that their employees are treated fairly and compensated well.

    Cons

Sometimes they can be stuck in old ways of doing things that no longer work for a company that has grown as fast as BC has.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to ensure that processes are updated and ensure flexibility.

I have been working at Blue Canopy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great opportunities to advance your career.

Both a pro and a con: If you want to advance faster, they expect you to work more that 40 hours on proposals or similar work.

    Cons

Same with any company - you'll be locked in a pay structure of 5% pay raises even if your true value greatly exceeds that. If you get another job offer, and they like you, the most I've heard of them countering with is 50% of the difference.

New managers have to learn trial by fire.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a mentoring program and leadership training set up.

I have been working at Blue Canopy full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

I've had a great experience working as a Sr. Consultant for Blue Canopy in the past. So much so that I'll be returning to the company in the next few weeks as an Associate. The environment at Blue Canopy is much different than you would find at an engineering juggernaut like Lockheed Martin or Boeing. It is much more dynamic and faster-paced, due to the nature of the work. However, I have found the work much more engaging here than anywhere else, which is why I've decided to return. I've worked 8+ years at engineering corporations across the nation and have found the pigeon-holed corporate culture stagnant and difficult to grow in. On the other hand, Blue Canopy presents individuals great opportunities to interface with customers and get their hands dirty right from the start. If you're someone who enjoys pursuing technical challenges with great rewards and proper recognition, definitely check out this company.

Just a note- this company has been winning a lot of contracts recently and has nearly tripled in size since 2010. Expect only more opportunities to come out of this.

    Cons

The $3,000 training budget leaves much to be desired. 3k only covers 1 or 2 certifications, unless you plan to self study everything. This was probably my major disappointment with the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management had been great so no real complaints. The only thing I'd suggest is increasing the training budget. $3,000 may potentially turn potential employees away from this great company.

I have been working at Blue Canopy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Lower level employees work very hard.

    Cons

Owners are the worst executives EVER! They think they are smarter than everyone else and make promises they have no intention of keeping. Many employees are hoping they sell the company to better owners.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Partners are very good. I feel sorry for them because they have to provide leadership to the employees in secret without jeopardizing their own jobs.

I have been working at Blue Canopy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Performance driven salaries and bonus structure. If you work hard and contribute to the cultural and business growth of the company you will be compensated appropriately.

    - Smaller IT Consulting Firm that relies on growth and promotions from within the company. They look to advance their own employees before hiring outside the company which is great.

    - BC gives great opportunities to have a lot of responsibilities if you show, over time, that you are capable of taking on duties. Lots of room to learn and grow your knowledge base in IT security.

    - Family oriented culture where you get to know your Senior-Level Management, the CEO, Principle, COO, CFO very well. They also provide 5-6 company functions per year for team building.

    Cons

    - Lack of professional training in-house and limited incentives to take IT training or certifications. While you receive $3,000 for "education and training", a lot of the more expensive training courses will not be approved except for special cases. They would prefer to pay the least amount of money and keep you billable as much as possible so week long trainings are not an option. If you are a self-study type of person than this company is for you. Self-study and BC will pay for you to take the exam but don't expect any 3-7 day training courses being approved on your first attempt.

    Pros

Good and smart people working there, just not management.

    Cons

It's your typical good old boys network. Useless, lazy, and sexist former military in cushy do nothing roles.

I have been working at Blue Canopy full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company really cares about its employees, lot of concern about development and social interactions. Excellent career opportunities.

    Cons

While they do genuinely care about their employees, following up and following through on any number of issues kills the morale. Lots of talk about professional development, no mentorship or actual leadership training. Lots of talk about training, but requests take forever to process. The senior leadership seems to be stuck on high level concepts and not very adept at giving tactical guidance to its mid-tier management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Too much emphasis is being placed on "PowerPoint" status report fiction. Pay closer attention to employees who consistently deliver actual results, live the core values, care about and develop their team mates and are desperately trying to advance company goals. These are the folks you want to surround yourselve's with. You hire really smart and talented people, smart and talented people know when it's time to stick around and when its time to go elsewhere.
