I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

My co-workers and teammates are good people who want to do a good job. Most are willing to go the extra mile to help or support. My managers have always been wonderful. The benefits are good.

    Cons

The commute and parking are brutal. If you're in the Ren Cen parking is really bad and most things you need to do or special events are in another building so you always have to build in walking/bus time. Managers are usually very good and supportive, but they are treated poorly by their directors and upper management which trickles down to the rest of us. There have been many tears shed after meetings with upper management who attack their team in front of others in a most unprofessional way. Someone I know in a different department told me they knew it was a successful day if they only cried once. I was in a meeting once where the director went around the table and told her team members individually how stupid they were and threatened their jobs in front of a vendor. And, I know of at least 3 people who left meetings where they were verbally attacked by their director, went straight to HR, got no support and just quit because they couldn't handle the stress. That director got a promotion. People are fired or forced to retire and no one knows why while others who barely do anything and treat people poorly are promoted. HR is not helpful in addressing these things even when multiple people complain about a leader and their abuse.

    Advice to Management

You're going to continue to lose good workers if you insist on allowing leaders to verbally and emotionally abuse people under them and do not address it even when HR is notified. Also, you should encourage tele-commuting more to reduce the stress your employees feel - almost all jobs could be done at home. For some people, working at home 2-3 (or more) days a week would be a good selling point and increase retention. Also, for the people who work in the Ren Cen - do some special things there so they feel included. All the special events - including exercise classes, lectures, and the sort.

    Pros

Steady paycheck, usually very good management structure and excellent employees abound. The company also offers excellent health and retirement benefits.

    Cons

Less than stellar employees can fly under the radar and alienate their fellow employees and/or subordinates. Unfortunately, there is very low morale related to changes in the company.

    Advice to Management

More employee appreciation days, and not just little tokens. The company used to go out of their way to make sure their employees were valued.
