Don't hitch your career to the BCBSM wagon

    Pros

BCBSM may be good for someone right out of college. There are usually lots of positions open since they are routinely getting rid of folks over 50. Few are able to work from home and almost everyone gets a desk, telephone and computer. If development is needed, there is no need to worry since micro management is rewarded.

    Cons

BCBSM lacks interest in pursuing excellence. They have a national reputation for lack of innovation, which can be a disadvantage when seeking a position outside of the company. Senior executives are many in number, but few are held accountable and fewer yet collaborate across divisions, which provides for slow moving projects that often do not result in forward momentum. Directors are rewarded for micro management, little progress and performing at status quo. Managers not empowered to make changes. There is a poor atmosphere for growth and development. The good ol' boy network is alive and well. White males are promoted; minorities are rarely promoted. Few staff work up to their potential. Overall, there is a poor organizational culture.

    Advice to Management

Rethink the number of senior executive positions. Adopt international vision for business (especially since there are a number of international customers). Allow more people to work from home. Better balance of work and home life. Improve fairness in promotions of minorities. Collaborate with other companies that have been recognized as "best places to work." Be the best non-profit you can be; serve the greatest number of Michigan citizens that can be served. Quit wasting money on challenges to the state. Spend money more wisely. Conduct more internal audits and hold senior executives accountable.

    Pros

    pay and benefits are good

    Cons

No work-life balance, the environment is extremely political, diversity is talked about but not practiced (complaints to outside organizations are common), senior leadership leaves a lot to be desired (they manage by intimidation and fear)

    Pros

Benefits are rich , esp. health ins.

    Cons

Very political. Audit management is gutless and political. They would not back up the staff. Finance function is a mess. Finance management constantly blame lower level staff for all their errors and fiascos. Constant management churn and they keep on layering management from outside hires who have little knowledge of people and processes.

    Advice to Management

Grow your people instead of bringing hired guns who do not have a clue and just bully lower staff.

    Pros

Most employees who perform the day to day work are very friendly and helpful. BCBSM has a great presence in the community.

    Cons

The turnover in out of control. Upper management is not visable and they do not take the time to communicate changes with employees. Upper management gives the impression they are too good for lower level employees. Disciplinary action is not fair for all employees and it appears the company discriminates.

    Advice to Management

Place people in positions that know the job and are willing to mentor.

    Pros

    Benefits,esp. employer paid healthcare related

    Cons

In last two years, BCBSM has adopted forced ranking system, which they would not admit, because admitting would expose them to lawsuits. Leadership lacks vision and knowledge. Consultants like Accenture and big-4 accounting make tons of money by doing the leaders' job. As a result, constant shift in the execution of priorities, culture of blaming and finding scapegoats when things go wrong, and constant shifts in direction. If you get a new manager who does not like you, watch out. HR will help them document falsehoods to get rid of you without severance.

    Advice to Management

Be smart, steady and confident, rather than constantly relying on the crutch of outside consultants,

    Pros

Very good health benefits, free parking, not prone to boom & bust cycles, close to expressway location, tight building security

    Cons

Leaders are nervous and clueless. They constantly hire contractors to tell them what they should do. When things go wrong, they find underling scapegoats and frame them. If you are minding your business and not kissing up the ladder, no matter how well you do the job, your job is at risk.

    Pros

There are no pros for this company.

    Cons

Black women are worth 3 points, white women are worth 2 points, white men are worth 1 point and black men are worth 0 points in the eyes of management. The older white men do most all of the work. Then they toss an inexperienced black woman or a white woman on top to take all of the credit. Black men have no value.

    Advice to Management

Just keep collecting those paychecks from the people of the state of Michigan.

    Pros

Great health, dental, and vision benefits.

    Cons

Cant move up unless you know somebody no matter the amount of experience you have. Favoritism. Terrible management. Union is useless and a bunch of liars. Lazy people who get away with doing nothing because they have been there 50 years. They keep vendoring out the work and it keeps getting messed up. Cultural diversity is a joke if you are white. I could go on for days.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees, get a backbone and stop lying and being lazy all of the time. Learn the work in your area.

    Pros

Main office is in great location -- downtown Detroit. Great place to work if you like enjoy working in a bureaucracy, good ol' boy network, or do not require opportunities for growth. Try to find a job anywhere else first and only take a job at this company if you are desperate. If desperate, continue to look for another job while working for this employer.

    Cons

Executives, upper and middle managers have poor management skills, are discriminatory, uninspiring, untrustworthy, dishonest, self promoters, and ensure low satisfaction and low morale of the employees. Similar to the Catholic Church, they protect directors and managers who harass their employees. The physicians lack integrity and are not held to any business ethical standards.

    Advice to Management

Develop staff into leaders to take your places; provide staff with funding for outside mentors; advise new employees not to waste their careers for an employer that contributes little to improving health care outcomes; provide funding to enable prospective employees to do background checks on their prospective bosses.
