    Pros

It is a great place to work for the pay and the benefits. You are well compensated and you cannot match the health care, tuition assistance, vacation time, sick time etc. It is also a union shop, so there is some security depending upon your job.

    Cons

The downside is the culture and leadership. Management loves to micro-manage and the ease at which you can be disciplined is way too high. Everything is a write-up and that makes it difficult to feel good about coming to work.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like adults and allow them to breathe when they are at work. Stop with the unnecessary work rules and change the culture of the organization. You will have happier employees, more productive employees and happier customers as a result.

    Pros

A good company trying to do the right thing. I like the integrity I see: trying to help the members, improving health care value, commitment to the community, social mission, embracing diversity and inclusion. I'm happy to contribute to an ethical company that's invested in growth and improvement. Good people to work with, good benefits including pension and 50% employer match for IRA.

    Cons

For many years they were a low-budget company surrounded by for-profit competitors. Their internal systems are not nimble, not integrated, painful to navigate. They're working hard to upgrade. Additionally (and not exclusive to BCBSM) employee growth and career development is encouraged for others, but not for admin assistants. It's inconvenient for leadership if you progress out of that position.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the push to have best in class data and IT systems. Continue to lead in diversity and inclusion for members, providers, employees and the community. Encourage growth and development for ALL staff, recognizing that we can contribute even more to the company.

Excellent pay and benefits, great co-workers and the ability to manage your own work.

    Cons

    Too top heavy upper management.

    Advice to Management

Please quit adding layers and layers of management between the top echelon and the worker bees.

    Pros

The workplace culture is great, everyone is always approachable and eager to help out. It is one of the largest health plans in the country. BCBSM provides great resources and benefits for its employees.

    Cons

BCBSM could improve the look of their online resources, making them easier to navigate. They could buy the full SharePoint Package to increase their workflow functionality. The physical floor space of the company could also be revisited, many areas have high-walled cubicles and don’t allow for easy collaboration.

    Pros

The Pay is very fair as well as time off and yearly bonuses and holidays. Depeneding on the the type of work and management you have the work could be enjoyable.

    Cons

There are several issues in many different areas with management (micro managing). They encourage you to "own it" but when you do, it is never right and they want it there way no matter what. There is no family work balance as they promote, being a health care company you would think more opportunities to work from home when having a laptop would be an option especially when you have children and they get sick or you travel a distance and are expected to drive in the terrible snow days we have. They do offer flex time. Also, the cubicles are very small, uncomfortable chairs. A definite upgrade on ergonomics would greatly benefit their employees.

    Advice to Management

Reduce to so many Managers and supervisors and Trust your employees to do their jobs. Too much mirco-managing still. Possibly look a little closer at some of your manager/directors and their supervisors a little closer to get a true census from the employees under them. Morale may go up if a positive change was done.
