I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people and great potential. They have excellent benefits & business/personal workshops for employees.

    Cons

It's not what you know at times, it's who. Union? What Union?

    Advice to Management

Place yourself in employees shoes at times. Push personal favorites aside & think business all the time.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

BCBSM is committed to being the industry healthcare leader in the Greater Metropolitan Detroit area. They emphasize members first. They are very involved in the community. BCBSM is an organization where they believe in knowledge is power. They are truly an equal opportunity employer.

    Cons

BCBSM could be more diverse. They could also streamline some of their processes. This would allow for better efficiencies across the entire firm.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I really enjoyed working for BCBSM. They have great benefits, competitive compensation (in sales and marketing) and really care about their employees. They have put a lot of time, effort and money into developing great solutions for customers. Very ethical company with a great sense of community involvement and responsibility.

    Cons

Work life balance is a big issue for a good part of the year, but that is the nature of the insurance industry. They are also typically slow to react to market changes. The stress of the job and the long hours can often create an unhappy work environment. If you don't like internal meetings and conference calls filling your schedule, this is not the company for you.

    Advice to Management

A lot of emphasis is put on interaction between managers/directors and their staff, yet the managers and directors seem to be constantly involved in internal meetings that interferes with this objective. I definitely recommend an evaluation of this practice. The need for the meetings seems to be perpetuated by the fact that people don't respond timely to requests from internal teammates, but when you ask why they haven't responded, it's because they have been in internal meetings or on calls for the last several days. This just isn't the way to meet customer needs in an efficient manner.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You make good money for taking calls, great benefit package, union, nice facility, advancement opportunities, semi fun annual events, nice downtown area with plenty of great food options.

    Cons

Stressful taking call after call of customers talking to you disrespectfully. Poor management who don't think you have a life outside the company. Too much gossiping when those efforts should be put into the work. Poor communication between reps and management. Poor working systems that give vague or unclear answers which you have to be accountable for.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your systems and your reps who work so hard day in and day out. Be more understanding of the people lives who have invested in you. Learn how to be accountable and handle those calls when providers get irate, don't run. Encourage your reps and recognize the good ones.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

benefits, salary, industry leader, ability to contribute.

    Cons

silos-needs to continue improving on communication within divisions & overall. System changes need to be more of a priority--members benefits and providers ability to comply with billing etc requires BCBSM to adjudicate benefits and process claims & payments correctly the 1st time in.

    Advice to Management

Directors & above need to meet & connect more with below manager staff to see what really goes on.

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I can't say enough about BCBSM. New hires are fully oriented. Benefits are incredibly generous and salary is good. Healthy living is encouraged and rewarded. Healthy food is always available and so are exercise classes and and places to do so. Team spirit is real. There's flex time, parking....

    Cons

Some processes such as performance review seem convoluted, but at least it is established and scheduled.

    Advice to Management

    Keep it up!

I have been working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and a variety discount options available. Some flexibility in start time. Company is slowly allowing for more flexibility with working at home but it depends on what area you're working in.

    Cons

Move to downtown location caused a much longer and hectic commute for many which greatly affects the work/life balance. Initial compensation was good; however, raises are minimal, no compensation for higher level degrees or certification. Great planning and vision at the corporate level that is not trickling down.

    Advice to Management

Take a good look at your hiring/promotion to leadership practices. There is an issue with finding the right fit. Spend more time in the trenches to see if our corporate goals and vision are getting to everyone.

I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company offers very thorough training so you're definitely prepared by the time you get on the floor. Management is pretty helpful when it comes to providing additional resources. The environment is very structured so there's really no surprises.

    Cons

MICROMANAGEMENT AT ITS BEST! If you prefer to work in a fishbowl where you're constantly monitored, then this is the place for you. The environment is very strict and controlled that it can be uncomfortable. You feel more like a disciplined child than a responsible adult. The temp positions has better compensation than perm positions. If you don't know the right people or have a good relationship with management then you can forget about a promotion or moving to a different department.

    Advice to Management

Reconsider some of the rules in place. The work environment should feel relaxed and elevating, not strict and uncomfortable.
