Pros
Benefits package is excellent. Compensation is commensurate with salaries in the area.
Cons
No career advancement. A silo approach when working.
Pros
The staff at BCBSM was so wonderful and made me feel comfortable and a part of the team. For only being an intern, I definitely felt like I was able to contribute to the company.
Cons
Their internship program was very well designed, however there were times when I did not have enough work to do.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep up what you are doing. You make interns feel so comfortable at your company, I would recommend your program to anyone.
Pros
Excellent benefits and friendly work environment. Strong senior leadership that is easy to align with. Top leaderships makes excellent decisions. Health care and other benefits are better than market along with compensation. Supportive environment for employees with families.
Cons
Managers and Directors are weak and lacking in leadership skills. Consequently, message/direction from senior leadership (which is extremely good) gets lost or distorted. Top heavy with VPs and directors. Very, very political and bureaucratic. Specifically to Corporate Procurement: toxic and communistic environment. High performance is not valued and is frowned upon as it highlights the lacking knowledge, skills and abilities of the managers and director.
Advice to Senior Management
Stay the course with your current business strategy, it’s a winner! MUST grow talent and eliminate bureaucrats from the managerial and director ranks to move from good to great. Individual contributors seeking career progression will be forced to leave the organization. Lastly, continue to embrace lean, BCBSM’s journey is in its infancy…………….
Pros
Job stability, Excellent opportunities, Good research projects, Good healthcare intervention programs, Good flexibility for working hours in R&D department, Good cohesion between co-workers, and excellent benefits.
Cons
Promotions are not based on merits, no incentives or appreciation for good work, and managers may less attention to junior analyst due to lack of time.
Advice to Senior Management
Please take merits and good work into consideration while promoting a person. Provide more information on bonus program rather than just stating the range. Also, state what are the criteria for performance review.
Pros
Benefits are very good; premiums are acceptable even though they have increased greatly over the past several years. Senior mgmt has tried to make an example of its employees to its members by increasing employee benefit premiums.
Cons
Most of management operates by "old school" principles of using scare tactics, intimidation, bullying, and even downright harrassment toward employees. Many lower and mid-level management members are relatives or friends of senior management, and they have survived numerous staff cutbacks even though their performance and ratings are low. Staff cutbacks are based on popularity contests and fears of older employees filing age-discrimination lawsuits rather than by performance guidelines.
Advice to Senior Management
Take the bull by the horns and clean house starting at the top and working down. Make staff reductions according to performance and education levels.
Pros
The best medical insurance offered. Great location in downtown to work with parking spaces. Awesome view of Detroit River
Cons
Low scale salary. The economy has affected Detroit and its suburbs.
Pros
employer will match 401 k benefits
Cons
Some leaders are more adept at supporting staff so that others can benefit and fully learn their jobs. Unfortunately there is some political relationships on who can and will (or will not) advance in their positions.
Pros
Good organization with heavy focus on doing the right thing - despite market pressures. Answerable only to employees and board and not interested in shareholders since it is non-profit.
Cons
Slow to make decisions and very risk averse. Provides very little opportunity for innovativeness.
Advice to Senior Management
Should be more decisive and willing to take risk to show the employees that they value and encourage innovative thinking.
Pros
Great benefit package at first...starting to lose benefits toward end. Good place to keep your head down and just do your job...out of sight out of mind mentality. In reality it was a good company and still can be, but in this employers market people and customers become replaceable with little thought. Union provides some protection, but like many unions protects the ones that need to be replaced and doesn't do enough for those suffering at the whim of management.
Cons
Newer management has business mentality and has lost employee/customer/community mentality that previous management had. Employees are more dis-satisfied, management is secretive and most efforts at improvement are directed at street-level employees only when an open management style may provide more employee engagement than current management may be willing to handle

Pros
Great benefits, very educated people. Some departments are very flexible which promotes loyalty to the business.
Cons
Some departments are crazy, some don't have the flexibility. Promotions are some times a mistery. Some people are officially told that management does not need to know what people they manage do, they just need to manage. Often disorganized.
Advice to Senior Management
Cancel the move to Detroit. Employees' morale is suffering. Many are looking to leave because of the move. Change of location will not benefit the business. Please.
