Could be a good place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

    ProsPay and benefits are good.

ConsFrom what I hear not all areas are bad to work, I just happen to be in one that is tough. At one point they were telling us how many highlighters and rubber bands we could have at our desk, written up if you do not hit sign in on the dot, even if you were working at your desk. Very stressful. The HR department tells everybody that if you do customer service, you can go anywhere in the company, not true, there are people with master degrees still waiting to move ahead. Some of it is due to the unions seniority process.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere will always be a few bad eggs in a grp, but instead of picking them out, you treat everybody with disrespect while acting like your compassionate to the stressful job we have. Threats of being written up does not work, but being somebodies mentor could do wonders.

    Operations Analyst (Former Employee)
    Detroit, MI

ProsFor someone willing to work hard and not be afraid to get involved, there are good advancement opportunities. Seasonal long hours can be expected in some of the departments I worked in.

ConsAs in most organizations, you'll find a good deal of politics. This trick is to keep focused on the job and avoid personality issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake time to solicit ideas from the line employees. Explain the goals at hand and ask for suggestions.

    Unrealistic expectations and employees undervalued

    Information Technology (Current Employee)
    Detroit, MI

ProsGood benefits and salary. Yearly bonus. Pension.

ConsExecutives message to employees is that BCBSM supports empowerment of employees and diversity. Management team does not support the Corporate Culture. Motivation comes from fear and intimidation. Unrealistic expectations are the norm and when deadlines aren't met it is blamed on the employees. Successes are dismissed and mistakes are amplified to promote a culture of fear of losing your job. Interns and contractors are treated with more respect and value than long-term employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementEncouragement, respect and appreciation goes much farther than fear and intimidation.
