Has wonderful goals and plans and falls short on the realization within the culture.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Detroit, MI

ProsGood benefits. Some managers are very good.

ConsSome managers are very dictatorial and do not empower their people. Leadership doesn't find out about it or doesn't deal with it. Employees suffer. Politics rule the culture. An opinion survey is completed yearly but nothing is done with it.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave skip meetings where you meet with employees and hear their concerns. Let them opt which meetings they attend within their department so they can avoid political backlash from speaking up.

Be careful of what you're getting into

Auditor III (Current Employee) Detroit, MI

    ProsBenefits,esp. employer paid healthcare related

ConsIn last two years, BCBSM has adopted forced ranking system, which they would not admit, because admitting would expose them to lawsuits. Leadership lacks vision and knowledge. Consultants like Accenture and big-4 accounting make tons of money by doing the leaders' job. As a result, constant shift in the execution of priorities, culture of blaming and finding scapegoats when things go wrong, and constant shifts in direction. If you get a new manager who does not like you, watch out. HR will help them document falsehoods to get rid of you without severance.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe smart, steady and confident, rather than constantly relying on the crutch of outside consultants,

Conservative company stuck in the past

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsLarge company with great benefits and salaries. They seem to prefer to promote from within so there can be good opportunities depending on what department you are working in.

ConsToo many redundant processes causing extra work. Tough to get things done as people can be very uncooperative and not open to new ways to do things. Endless meetings stop you from getting actual work done.
