I worked at Blue Cross full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great Access and Perspective to see the landscape of the industry.

    Cons

The BCBS Association has become lazy. They are a highbred association that has not appropriately incentivized senior management. Too many stakeholders. Disinterested Board. No shareholders. Limited accountability on the part of senior management. Executive leadership is extremely political and chasing their own agendas which has led to bad behavior. Regarding FEP, OPM should force the association to compete with United and eliminate their captive market. This would help change things and ultimately improve the culture. They owe this to the US taxpayer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up. The Blues system needs more than brand to thrive. Many good people but poor leadership at the Association. Individual plans do a much better job and survive despite the association.

I worked at Blue Cross as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Big brand name and presence in industry. Unsurpassed reach in the healthcare world. Exposure to a wide reach in the healthcare world.

    Cons

Low compensation and standards for employees. Low expectations for work output by employees. The apathy is contagious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire 60-75% of the staff, and then pay everyone 50% more, and replace attrition only for 2.5 years.

The internship was a great stepping stone, but BCBS was a large, slow moving insurance dinosaur

    Former Employee - Operations Intern
    Former Employee - Operations Intern

I worked at Blue Cross as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Intense job security. I saw a bunch of poorly performing employees who were allowed to retain their positions for years. They seem to sincerely care about the health and happiness of their employees. Some leadership seemed bright and company is definitely trying to adapt to the new market. The company is dominant and without any real competitors.

    Cons

As a result of BCBS's dominance they have not had to adapt in years and it is a therefore very large dinosaur of the company with outdated technology and has a moderate level of slow thinking low level employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Adapt the new market and find a better way to get everyone on board than quarterly propaganda like meetings in which you say functionally nothing about the company. Listen to middle managers and find a way to eliminate the bureaucratic nature of the company. You will lose good ideas across all levels due to the old, hierarchical structure that the company works on.

I worked at Blue Cross full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Free Flavia (coffee, tea, hot chocolate) machine.
    - Management didnt mind if I took smoke breaks.
    - Close to public transportation.
    - Interesting mix of employees.

    Cons

    - Below average pay.
    - Excessive hours for a salaried position.
    - Management would expect us to respond to emails 24x7x365, however management would send non-work related emails after hours wasting my personal time.
    - They did not bother to inform me that I was terminated after almost 3 years of being employed, I found out when I showed up to work and my key card did not work. Management refused to respond to my emails asking why I was terminated.
    - Their application development teams are almost exclusively made up of H1B visa holders. I find it difficult to belive that they could not find Americans who had application development experience. I wouldn't
    - Excessive use of out sourcing organizations.
    - Employees brought in by out sourcing organizations were treated as 2nd class employees by many other employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring H1Bs visa holders, there are plenty of Americans who could use those jobs. Insource your outsourced employees. Grow some balls and tell employees they are being terminated. Bring compensation up to market averages.

Life changing and not in a good way.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    I worked at Blue Cross

    Pros

The hours was flexible. They offered tuition reimbursement and encourage promoting from within.

    Cons

They expected more and more from employees as time went on. The environment was infectious in a bad way. There was a lot of negative energy and pressure to always be at work; sometimes working six or more days straight. The amount of work you put out took precedence over the quality of work even if it was done incorrectly. It was all about numbers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to those below you. They are the backbone of the company and appreciate them.
