I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Company believes in fostering careers of employees. Opportunities are constant and plentiful. Company also supports employee health and wellness; free testing onsite. Phenomenal benefits.

    Cons

So many levels of management and required approval process can really slow down productivity. Also, many long-term employees can 'hide' their limited contribution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't rest on your laurels, and don't let your staff either. It's a great company and deserves 100% engagement.

Advancement to move up; ways to grow and thrive. Work life balance is very good here and there are not strenuous hours.

    Cons

office politics can take time adjusting to. Slow to change technology and is very paper-driven. Very focused on the present not future.

    Pros

Upper management is smart but CEO Brad Wilson is outsourcing as much as possible.

    Cons

Many low-level supervisors not qualified and/or afraid to think for themselves.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Part with lower level sups who are not able to think beyond the immediate numbers.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Coworkers were great in my dept. We all were dedicated and worked very hard! Great benefits.

    Cons

Training was hurried and insufficient, management was in their own world, employees were pressured to resign rather than be terminated if the goals are not met. High turnover in the dept. I worked in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come down to earth and listen to your employees.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you want to join the ranks of "lifers," this is the place - Chicago has few who completed college, let alone an advanced degree. DC has several with advanced education, but don't try to innovate or effect change. Status quo and contract preservation is where it's at.

    Cons

Rigid, arrogant management. Contract and procurement shell games. Too close to the client - to the point of becoming the worst stereotypical image of "federal employees" (~do nothing types); no interest in changing policies or procedures to be more effective, save money, provide better customer focus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop blaming employees for the poor culture. Stop doing surveys that don't lead to change. Stop pretending to care about federal employees - it's all about the premium revenue sharing, for the member plans. Keep up the good work keeping out the competition, rip-off federal employees and taxpayers. Oh, and nice collaboration with CareFirst & the DC SHOP in dumping over 12,000 members of congress into a small employer exchange for 50 or fewer employees!

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association

    Pros

The office has great benefits, some areas are great to work with, and promotions mostly occur with Upper Management.

    Cons

The compensation for employees with initiating dedicated skills and a hard worker receive minimum compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some upper management teams members participate in position and they are not familiar with the roles or responsibilities. This does not allow the team to become a strong matrix.
