    Pros

People below management are the best people in the world with which to work. Conditions are excellent -- nice building, on-site parking, cafeteria, break room, exercise center, health center.

    Cons

Managers range from caring, but hampered by upper management's accountant attitudes, to downright incompetent in all areas of good management practices. Althought having a reputation of caring for employees for decades, the controlling management switch from the Marketing Department to the Accounting Department in 2008 saw the first layoffs ever. The management theory of "bottom line first, foremost, and forever" quickly turned the attitudes of employees from "what can I do to help the company succeed" to "I can't wait to get out of here".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Return the company back to the Marketing department. They, at least, had the goodwill of the customer and the employees at heart, and made sure that everyone associated with the company shared in the success, be they employee, customer, or contractor.

    Pros

Child care benefits, on site fitness center, onsite dining center, decent pay

    Cons

Limited advancement opportunities. Corporate downsizing frequently with no regard for who, what or why.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay closer attention to the talent and who's contributing versus blanket sweeps across departments

    Pros

Nice benefits, even though you surprisingly don't get their best insurance offering if you are not an executive. Cordial work environment. Managers understand life/work balance. BCBSAL has a high retention rate with very few layoffs. Many bonuses built into pay structure beyond the base salary. Excellent facilities.

    Cons

Very resistant to change. Innovation is non-existent and standards are typically 10 year outdated. Very flat organizational structure with little opportunity for advancement. Base salary is much lower than average, even though bonus structure typically covers the difference. Many enterprise silos with little collaboration between groups. Upper level management is out of touch with what is happening on a day to day basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

New ideas should be nurtured, not crushed. Spend more time learning about what challenges your teams face. Work more on facilitating process improvement, rather than throwing in more and more layers of bureaucracy.

    Pros

Some of the pros: the wages are decent, the monthly bonus structure is okay but heavily taxed, the hours are set, no weekends, major holidays off, tuition reimbursement

    Cons

Constant & nit-picky policy changes, blantant favoritism/discrimination by site manager, HR staff, and center managers, intentional miscommunication, no advancement opportunities (especially if you are not the site-manager's favorite), good people are fired or intimidated into quitting due to personal vendettas

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the entire HSC management team, trainers, and support leaders. Start over and hire for merit, not who likes who or who hangs out with who after work! Stop with the constant lies just to get people in the door. With the way the economic is, there is no reason to mislead people to get them to accept a job with your company.

    Pros

They have bonuses and a pension. The people there are nice and it is a good company to work for. I have no real complaints

    Cons

The only down fall to the hole thing is there is very little room for growth nobody ever leave there. They normally retire after 30+ years.

    Pros

Stable working environment despite the economic and political upheaval around healthcare. Good place to hitch a wagon and ride to retirement. Good Benefits, PTO, ect.

    Cons

Technologically close minded. Mainframe shop that is happy with the status quo.If it takes 10 people to monitor, report, diagnose and correct a problem where automation could have done it better/faster with less/no human involvement, doesn't matter, it has always been done that way, so it always will.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the changes to health care coming in Alabama with the Affordable Care Act, BCBSAL will no longer be the only viable choice. Need to innovate to stay competitive, and changing the marketing material from "Blue Cross" to AlabamaBlue isn't going to cut it.

    Pros

Hours of operations and having own personal area are the only Pros. They completely lied to us about this place.

    Cons

Where do I begin? In the Huntsville center, you will not promote off the phone. No room for advancing. Favoritism plays a big role if you keep your job. You have a hand full of people that kiss the site manager's behind and can get anything they want or other in trouble. The Support Leader do absolutely nothing but walk round and play online and get paid more. They really don't like to help others. No HR department so we have to call or send email to handle certain information that you would like to have face to face. Huntsville center handles most of the provider calls and stays busy. The managers constantly lies to use about the calls are going to get better but never do. Don't waste your time at the Huntsville site because you will be sorry. Even the new people are wanting to leave. As long as you are working here, you WILL be stuck on the phones all day every day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take some time to actually talk to your employees about problems. Stop showing favoritism to certain people. We are not dumb, we know whats going on.
