I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama

    Pros

BCBS of Alabama is a great place to work. Good values, nice people, nice office. Care about professional development.

    Cons

I didn't find much cross department collaboration or socializing. Like any large company, there's red tape and very based on hierarchy.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent salary; basic benefits; dining center on site.

    Cons

Super conservative; old fashioned corporate management; Dilbert atmosphere; too many meetings; mind-numbing politics. Almost unbearable to work here if you are anything but a drone or yes-man. Management espouses their "corporate values" but it's all a joke. Nobody wants to take responsibility. No risk-taking, nothing but business as usual...and since the accountants are in charge, that has meant a singular focus on the bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are overworking your best people while execs get fat bonuses. Accountants at the helm have turned this wonderful company into another corporate behemoth that is anything BUT "the caring company" it used to be. You don't care about your employees or your customers, and you are losing both steadily. General consensus across all levels is that we can't wait for Kellogg to retire.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company is stable with a built in customer base. mirco bonuses per project are a plus. Upper management is starting to promote from outside the old mainframe pool which is giving the Systems department some life.

    Cons

It seems every year they announce another benefit cut and the past couple of years the executives have been splitting up the millions in "profits" (not for profit companies don't earn profits, just revenue over cost) .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employees are starting to feel more akin to a expense number on a spreadsheet than a person. Bring back the Blue Cross of old that was the caring company. Your bonuses prove we can afford it.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are good. Good training.

    Cons

If you get sick or something tragic happens to you during training. They will write you up and make you feel like a horrible person. I understand you need to be there during training, but there is so much dead time that you could make up what you've missed. The job is very stressful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay should be really be better for the bashing you constantly have to put up with from customers.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

People below management are the best people in the world with which to work. Conditions are excellent -- nice building, on-site parking, cafeteria, break room, exercise center, health center.

    Cons

Managers range from caring, but hampered by upper management's accountant attitudes, to downright incompetent in all areas of good management practices. Althought having a reputation of caring for employees for decades, the controlling management switch from the Marketing Department to the Accounting Department in 2008 saw the first layoffs ever. The management theory of "bottom line first, foremost, and forever" quickly turned the attitudes of employees from "what can I do to help the company succeed" to "I can't wait to get out of here".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Return the company back to the Marketing department. They, at least, had the goodwill of the customer and the employees at heart, and made sure that everyone associated with the company shared in the success, be they employee, customer, or contractor.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama

    Pros

Child care benefits, on site fitness center, onsite dining center, decent pay

    Cons

Limited advancement opportunities. Corporate downsizing frequently with no regard for who, what or why.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay closer attention to the talent and who's contributing versus blanket sweeps across departments
