    Pros

Project Managers are a valued part of the organization. BCBSNC uses structured PM methodology. I experienced a good deal of autonomy as well as leadership when needed.

    Cons

Project timelines can be tight and overreaching. Project business owners can be less engaged than they should be making project managers work harder.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You can a learn a lot from this company in regards to customer service and administrative work. You are definitely held accountability and you must take ownership to every take at hand. You can move up fast if you stay dedicated to your job and committed to the integrity of the company.

    Cons

With some positions, if a groups company image was not that good in the past, other managers would be slow to accept an employee from that group in the future.

    Advice to Management

Continue to keep employees engaged in the directions that the company is heading. Encourage employees to take advantage of all learning opportunities.

I have been working at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible work options Work from home options Casual Environment

    Cons

Lacks diversity in senior management One state entity Limited opportunities

    Advice to Management

Overall this is a good company to work for, and has my immediate managment is very flexible with my work arrangement. However, I'm frustrated and exhausted on multiple fronts. Why does every change take multiple layers of review and approval? There is too much reliance on committees, there is a lack of accountability. Too many Directors and VPs spend too much time being political and ensuring their current level of 'power'. I'd appreciate more cash compensation, not just 'points'. I was offered an opportunity that required more time, visibility and responsibility....but am expected to do this for $0 more. Some other notes: Bureaucracy makes getting changes done too difficult VP & Director level have fear of failure, don't take risks Culture does not embrace new ideas, everything must go through multiple layers of approval and committees.

I worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - BIG company benefits - Blue University (THE #1 benefit of the company - promotes continuous education and training) - Worked with some amazingly talented people and made lifelong friends - Strong PM maturity model - Toastmasters club

    Cons

    - I worked for the company 9 years and went through 7 different reorgs - EXTREMELY political environment (like swimming in shark infested waters) - Middle managers look out for themselves instead of their teams - IT (a circus)

    Advice to Management

    - Learn to LISTEN - Be HONEST (people know when you're lying) - Staff high priority projects early so you don't expect people to perform miracles in the 11th hour - Help team members reach their career goals

The company is a good place to work at. Assuming you're not going to be outsourced.

    Pros

Compensation is very good Vacation time is excellent Bonus

    Cons

Outsourcing shift in IT Difficult to accomplish projects with bureaucracy

    Advice to Management

I know there has to be efforts to reduce costs, but if everyone outsources, who's going to be around to buy health insurance? Appears to be self defeating effort, especially when this goes offshore, but I don't presume to be the smartest person in the room.
