I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Mission of company, PTO is generous and solid benefits. W/L balance is great but that's only because there is no oversight into what really is getting done.

    Cons

Awful management makes terrible decisions that effect daily work environment and ability to get real work done. Any true leadership or new ideas get met with blank stares and overall negativity. Under performers often praised due toe their obvious ability to "play the game" instead of the true value they bring to the organization.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making decision based on personal feelings and practice what you preach.

I worked at Blue Shield Of California

    Pros

It used to be a good place to work. Location, and PTO were perks.

    Cons

Political environment. Constant re-orgs that take forever and do harm rather than fix anything. Promoted "leaders" who are incompetent. The company doesn't retain talent. A sad, sad frenetic place to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue - stop with the reorgs, retaliatory environment and overworking your middle management.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Overall, A good work environment with a good salary and conveniently located near BART

    Cons

There is some political maneuvering, but I did not have to deal with too much of it. The environment is a little sclerotic...It can take a long time to get things done. IT needs a significant amount of lead time (Bureaucracy). Naturally, there is a significant concern regarding personal data, but they need to balance the overall need / requirement to maintain data security, while moving projects forward--This is probably the weakest aspect of this company. Although I was able to limit the number of meetings that I attended, I knew some people on some days who were triple booked throughout most of the day. I also found myself in the position of reporting numbers, which did not make sense for reporting purposes to make valid decisions upon....It was as if people had to deliver reports or numbers, which in turn made people do a significant amount of extraneous work to deliver the invalid information which was requested....Bad data in...Bad conclusions and decisions made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management is aware of the IT problem, and they know they have to do better in terms of managing budgets. They have consultants reviewing the situation and making recommendations, but the ship will turn slowly

    Pros

The Pros to working at Blue Shield is the security of working for a large company. It is a very safe and comfortable place to work. They also really place an emphasis on work place balance.

    Cons

The challenge to working at Blue Shield is the lack of clarity and leadership within management ranks. Also doing your work has proven to be a very complex, which can make the most simple task very difficult.

I have been working at Blue Shield Of California full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Many good and well-intended people. Lots of charitable activities one can participate in. CEO is smart and really wants to make things better.

    Cons

Poor leadership in IT; too many things happening all at once. Nepotism and incompetence across infrastructure (IT) leadership team.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit paying for and talking about wanting to make BSC a "great place to work" if you are not going to hold all directors and above accountable for their actions. There should not be different rules for different people based on who they know or work for or the "club" they are a part. Stop taking shortcuts in planning while pushing for "ruthless execution" and short-term gains which is more often than not poor execution that will have long-term negative implications. Leaders need to set the example through their actions rather than just continually talking about it...only then will things start to change.
