    Pros

Ok company to work for, especially for people fresh out of college. Good learning environment and get to solve interesting problems. The people are definitely the best part about working there.

    Cons

Work life balance can be difficult to achieve. They are taking steps to improve the culture but it is hard to find noticeable improvements, it might be one of the processes that take time to actually work.

    Advice to Management

Keep your ears closer to the ground of what the employees talk and complain about, there are definitely some lower hanging fruits that the company can easily resolve with minimal resources.

    Pros

    • Blue Shield of California Foundation – charitable foundation that targets domestic violence and gives back to the community. • Recently created diversity clubs. Most of the bigger employers have this but it’s nice to know they recognize the necessity. • This company has goals to be the No. 1 healthcare carrier in the state. Plenty of room for growth. • Onsite gym that barely anyone uses.

    Cons

There is plenty of room for improvement in terms of technology. Most of their underwriting is done using MS Excel leaving a wide margin for errors. Also information isn't centralized so underwriters are constantly duplicating work with the same information. Pay here is competitive however if you're someone who believes in loyalty to your employer, you may be shortchanging yourself. Underwriting in particular has gone through quite a few managers and with each new leader, new people. There's no expectation for new people to know everything on Day 1 but just know that loyalty isn't always rewarded for those who have stuck through all the changes. Unless you’re volunteering, than you may be upset to know how unevenly divided the pay scale is here.

    Advice to Management

    • BSC is located in San Francisco, CA – a mini Silicon Valley. Please invest in technology in every area of the Company. • Talent Acquisition – You made a change last year that made it nearly IMPOSSIBLE for an employee with aspirations to advance to be rated nothing more than a “3 – Meeting Expectations”. If your goal was to save money during Performance Reviews – mission accomplished! However, I hope you realize that you also squashed the morale and motivation for employees to want to do more. If in the end you’ve widened the gap to advance… what’s the point of trying?

    Pros

Blue Shield's mission attracts passionate people who are not just there for the paycheck. The Blue Shield Foundation is incredibly inspiring. Blue Shield's HR organization has gone through a very positive transformation; this company clearly gets how important this is to a company inviting culture shifts and change.

    Cons

Though Blue Shield has experienced a shift, bureaucracy keeps things moving fairly slowly. The organizational structure contributes to this.

    Advice to Management

While the highest level business unit structure is appropriate, the org structures within some of the business units do not result in clear accountability or logical segmentation of work.
