    Managing Director - National Programs

    Managing Director (Current Employee)
    Chicago, IL

ProsLocation - easy access to public transport and a great neighborhood
    Name - a prestigious company
Longevity - most people who make it in can stay for a long time
Work day - 37.5 hrs, easy to do

ConsThere is no way to prepare or mold to the politics within this organization. You either are a very political (2-faced, deceptive, appearance over substance) person or you are not. If you are not - your skills, knowledge or work ethics mean nothing.
Be aware - if you work here, you may be fired for doing things other people might consider smart. I.e. working from home after hours, making LinkedIn connections (take time to notice that people currently employed there have very weak LinkedIn Profiles), introducing yourself to others within the company (all introductions and interactions are directed).

Advice to Senior ManagementReview your internal culture (a re-org is not enough to improve operations).
Your employees are not aware of ACA and are making decisions without considering how the over all market will change - national accounts, TPA's and through the exchanges.
BCBSA can lead the market but your staff is too political and uninformed to do anything but respond to research that is years old.

    Meh.

    Customer Service (Former Employee)
    Jacksonville, FL

ProsDecent training, you had a few weeks to learn the system.

ConsTypical call center environment, emphasis is on quantity not quality. Didn't really feel there was an easy way to get help from a "higher-up".

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

    Incredible experience

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Washington, DC

ProsYou are right in the heart of health policy and business. The people are incredibly friendly, and can teach you so much. Incredibly fast paced, you will have a great time.

ConsThe only con I could possibly think of is that often times everyone gets SO busy that as an intern, you find yourself a little lost.

Within Strategic Services, it is the ultimate training ground to learn how to play, or fall victim to, political games

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsA number of staff members are incredibly smart and wonderful to work with. This can be a good environment to learn about the insurance industry at a high level (not at an operational level, but from a theoretical standpoint).

ConsPeople stay because the culture in Strategic Services (management?) convinces them that they are truly not smart enough to do anything else. Low self esteem permeates this division. This is coupled with the fact that many (but not all) managers through SVPs will not give you real feedback. Leadership truly does pick their favorites and let's them shine (and protects them along the way). The rest are headed nowhere at a nice and slow pace. This is not a place to grow your career quickly. A lot of bad work habits are developed and cultivated here that will not do you any favors in any other company or industry. This is in no way an action-oriented organization (at least in Strategic Services) so if you are looking for real work, real results and real accountability, you should look elsewhere.
