I have been working at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

I love working for BCBSSC because the team is like family. The training given here is superb. Everyone shares knowledge rather than hoarding it.

    Cons

The team is like family. If the senior member gets frustrated, everyone gets frustrated!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sometimes there is a little too laid back of an attitude. That is the reason that some people work 70 tickets or 100 tickets in a day while others work only 2 or 3 tickets in an entire day.

I have been working at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Stable employment in majority areas. Insurance is a need that will not go away. Decent benefit package and tuition reimbursement. Large emphasis on teamwork.

    Cons

Without a college degree, no hope of long term advancement. Will be in training for approx six weeks. Job can be stressful, and management can tend to micro-manage at times. Keeping up morale cab be tough if not right manager. Too many chiefs

I worked at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The management staff of application development areas are concerned not only with providing exceptional service, but also in growing their employees.

    Cons

Just like with any IT position, it can be difficult to get upper management to understand technical advances and benefits of doing things outside of standards for situations that are far better with a custom design.

I have been working at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Good benefits overall... nice people.

    Cons

Too many reductions and unstable contracts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow lower level management (Managers, Directors, VP's) to make decisions. Always having to go to the different company Presidents for decisions doesn't make sense. Streamline processes. Tend to make some processes more complicated.

I have been working at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Very good a getting new business.

    Cons

Very mainframe centric. Political and not easy to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Front line managment is very difficult. They don't want you to be technical but only hire technical people. They then hold you responsible for technical decisions.

Work Hard, Small Chance for Promotion, Training within departments minimal

I worked at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Tuition reimbursement, benefits are good.

    Cons

Work in IS to receive the best chance of recognition!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to promote individuals who deserve it without constantly having to interview for a new position. This is why many employees end up leaving departments for others, it's the only way they are able to move forward. If the departments would work harder to recognize great employees the turnover rates would improve. Keeping the same employees happy within a department will only improve the work in the department. Acknowledge those who go above and beyond more often, and quit babying those who do the minimum.

I worked at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Great dedicated employees. They will give 100% and are very helpful. Great insurance, gym, retirement plan. Nice work environment. I loved working for them. Would still be with them if I wasn't RIF'ed.

    Cons

Do not expect to be promoted into management no matter how many degrees or how may years you have been with them. You can be a dedicated employee for 19 years, work hard to get a degree and you will NOT be promoted to management. Was told by the VP, Director, HR and Manager to get a part time job as a supervisor somewhere else then I can apply for a management job. Also DO NOT turn anyone into compliance you will ruin your career. Management and directors will make your life hell. DO NOT TRUST THE COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT and The Instil Health division.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your biggest assets are your employees. Stop hiring unqualified people to be managers just because they were managers at Dairy Queen, Burger King or some other place does not qualify them to do the job. Employees at BCBS of SC refer to managers as directory assistance because anytime you ask them a question they refer you to someone else.

    Pros

Good team atmosphere. The government programs side is pretty nice to work for.

    Cons

Certain departments are difficult to work in, the pay can be low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work with lower level employees more to find out how to boost morale.

I have been working at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time

    Pros

    1. Business casual dress.
    2. Paid time off.
    3. Depending on which department you work in, management is excellent and willing to provide opportunities for advancement.
    4. Despite organizational shortcomings, strong talented employees are more than capable of getting the job done.

    Cons

    1. Processes are too antiquated and are full of red tape, which tends to hinder progress.
    2. Promotions are based on who you know. This is a company in the good ole south ran by these good ole southern white boys.
    3. Pay is way below market value.
    4. Technology and systems are outdated.
    5. Company does not value innovative ideas.
    6. Too many managers and not enough non-management employees. Everybody wants to be in charge.
    7. Company is not cohesive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lower your pay and raise the pay of those who actually do the work.
