I worked at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

    Good benefits, especially health insurance.

    Cons

Managers treat employees like children. For example, berating people for taking 5 extra minutes for lunch, even though they worked 3 hours unpaid overtime the night before.
Frequent network outages and problems. Router cabinets looked like spaghetti. No backup electricity/UPS. Did not issue laptops. Had to take hand-written notes, then type up on desktop PC.
Facility was nasty. Carpet rarely cleaned. Saw dead mice fall from the ceiling. Bathroom too small for the number of people using it and not cleaned frequently. Cafeteria also very inadequate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Before promoting people to manager, make sure they have the right personality and people skills,

I have been working at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Business casual. OK pay. Has pension plan, but not for new hires. 401k plan.

    Cons

Overworked. Everything is priority. No project planning just project pushing. Push good workers to to brink of exhaustion. Let underachievers and excuse makers continue working and getting paid. Little or no pay raises. No work-life balance. No consideration for people who work extensive overtime unless you are "friend" or "relative" management. Highly political. Favoritism and Nepotism is rampant and obvious. Arrogant leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Know the people who actually do the work and reward them. They are not always the ones that are vocal looking for recognition. They still deserve to be paid for what they deliver. You have long term people who take advantage and make excuses and shirk responsibilities. You have people who are dedicated and are good performers and they deserve to be compensated for what they do. Give the raises to those who do the work.

I worked at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

    Educating beneficiaries
    Working with coworkers
Work/ life balance (at the location I was employed)
    Benefits were okay

    Cons

    Compensation was laughable
Upper Management did not seem to understand the importance of employees or our duties
Lack of competency with management (at times)
    No growth at my location

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to be upfront with employees. It's hard to be loyal to a company that does not return the same loyalty. Compensation needs to improve.
