I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Exciting work to be done! Tremendous growth is occurring, leaving employees with unique and exciting business challenges to solve. Never a dull day! Fulfilling growth within position that can lead to advancement.

    Cons

The building's temperature control and parking needs improvement. Other than that, I think this place is great to work for!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Explain the "why" and "how" behind decisions more frequently to fully engage the workforce as a whole. Help employees understand how they can continue their career growth within the position they have if an immediate promotional opportunity is not available.

I have been working at Bluestem Brands as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

As a BA contractor this is my view of BSB:

    - Willing to change their business process
    - Team members are willing to help new employees

    Cons

    - Not much system documentation
    - Growing pains
    - Lack of accountability
    - Company verbiage is ambiguous depending on departments
    - Scope change
    - Business does not trust IT

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find BA's that are willing to document the current/future business process flow. This should help new employees.

I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexibility and great culture. Good coworkers and easy to associate with. Upper management are really transparent when it comes to sharing info. All is done rapidly

    Cons

Benefits might need some improvements but overall good. Salaries are a bit lower because of all the benefits and extra activities to encourage communication and friendship

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate your employess right away and not after waiting too many years. Do not loose employees and regret it after they leave. That cause more stress to team members and more people that wants to quit someday.

    Pros

They allow employees to work from home.
They are reasonably flexible on workday schedule.
All employees are eligible to receive bonuses, even hourly workers.

    Cons

The people doing the grunt work usually don't receive the praise they deserve.
It seems the wrong people receive advancement.
    Unfair work distribution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Marketing Department meetings are a complete waste of time.

I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

This company goes above and beyond to recognize employees for their hard work. They do many things to celebrate employees and bring people together. I don't feel like a number, I feel like I really make a difference.

    Cons

Being a small company you tend to wear many hats. This can be stressful at times. We are growing very fast and it has been hard to keep up with tasks. It's great for the company but a lot more work for us.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need more conference rooms. Can we add a 2nd floor and underground parking?

Their claim of transparency is far from the truth.

I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

401k and Health Benefits are good

    Cons

Salary is good only if you are a Director or above. Which in that case - overpaid. If you know the right people and in the right group your career will flourish - if not, you will work yourself mad for nothing. Appreciation is a big show with no substance. The CEO is good at portraying himself as a "regular guy" Good speaker at best...again, no substance. Bluestem may have changed their name but you can't turn a horse into a zebra by painting on stripes. Petters is in prison for a reason.

    Pros

    Small company lots of potential

    Cons

IT leadership thinks it's a small company but needs to think bigger picture. Operates like a mom and pop shop but the growth is causing it to need a bit more structure than they are accustomed to.

I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Co-workers to commiserate with (and everyone definitely does); convenient location; decent benefits and time-off; "half-day" Fridays in the summer

    Cons

This company wants to be "bigger" like Target but the Merchandising department is run by Target rejects - no clear vision for the future or even the present, we get told different high-level strategies at every turn, and absolutely no transparency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please, please rethink management in Merchandising - there are very few strong and capable leaders (Cliff and Jenele are probably the only exceptions).

High growth, fast paced company with great business model and smart people throughout

I have been working at Bluestem Brands full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great, energetic leadership that starts at the top. The business model is brilliant and sustainable and built to tough in the competitive retail sector. There is a strong entrepreneurial spirit and energy amongst the teams which contributes to an exciting and fun

    Cons

There is a lot of work to do in a small annual window. Company is (appropriately) hyper-focused during Holiday period but this create a burdensome pace of work up until that time when it all seems to halt in support of holiday period. This creates a bit of a crazy, hectic atmosphere during the other 6-7 months of the year. Combined, there is no real 'downtime.' Furthermore, the lean staffing model is hard on the team and morale due to the aforementioned. Leadership could stand to be more compassionate, empowering and trusting toward team and managers to set priorities, hire talent and manage workload.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ease up. Let your leaders lead. Focus consistently on the strategic level across departments and let/trust that your teams are smart, capable and can get things done. Award people more consistently for hard work.
