Pros
Good work environment, good benefits. Very good company to start out with and use as a stepping stone. Very good job on "paper"
Cons
Saleries are marginal average. Vacation is low compared to other industries. Job groth is essentially not existend - however this depends on the division.
Current senior leadership is a joke. Boeing used to be a name brand that stands for solid performance - now they are just playing the shareholder value game and empty unrealistic promises like everyone else in the industry.
Advice to Senior Management
Please, no BS anymore, we are all very educated and can't take it anymore. What about acountability? Senior managers who are running the company into the ground (787) still all have jobs?
Pros
I was able to get experience as a liaison engineer. I use management skills and communication skills on the job.
Cons
Constant change of management make it difficult to perform ones job. There was little to no communication and between management and employees.
Advice to Senior Management
Listen more and act less. Use more updated management styles
Pros
Great work life balance. Protected work hours. Opportunity for overtime. Fanatstic product and incredible facilities where the planes are manufactured.
Cons
Moves at an ants pace. Not enough work for younger employees. Not enough work in general. Not enough of a challenge.
Advice to Senior Management
Get in touch with younger employees. With all the gray matter turnover in the near future Boeing needs to get with the needs of the hounder generations and their desire to really add to the company. More challenges for younger employees
Pros
Great opportunity to network, and move around the company. Great benefits for you and your family. Lots of opportunities to get involved outside of work as well.
Cons
Yes, Boeing provides good benefits to work there. However the culture and work environment was not up to par. You really need to ask about the type of team dynamic you will be working with. People who work at Boeing range from 20-60. With that comes a variety of working personalities. Unfortunately, I was placed in the wrong team and did not have the experience I was looking for.
Advice to Senior Management
Management was fine. Manager-Employee relationship was satisfactory. Needed to work on team dynamics and communication. Training could have been a little better as well.
Pros
Well there is safety in a big corporate environment like Boeing.
I like the fact that there are personal resources within the factory that make working there a little easier such as coffee houses and therapy\exercise stations.
The product is fascinating and aviation enthusiasts who work there are cool to talk with
Cons
Management is a joke .. the are so reactive as they are terrified for their jobs
The camaraderie in the workforce team is non existent especially within the IT structure
Everyone acts scared for their jobs to the point where people are just down right rude and unfriendly.
It seriously pathetic
the work environment (mindset does not give the good people there justice.
Advice to Senior Management
I wish I could offer management SOME advice but this is one beast that die in Seattle and Everett. I hope the rumors of relocation will spur innovation and an enjoyable work atmosphere.
Create a conversation with everyone in addressing these issues. Do it so it does not cause issues. I remember working in a room and the managers all got together for that morning meetings and wow what was said was horrific if I was an executive of stock holder for that matter. Boeing HAS to get to the root of this to be a place where people actually want to work and not just for the paycheck.
Pros
Tons of opportunities for interns, competitive salaries
Cons
Understaffed, outdated computer software, early hours
Advice to Senior Management
Less bureaucracy
Pros
- amazing work/life balance
- great friendly people and work environment. Everyone is really nice and there is no back stabbing like you hear about in other companies.
- their further education program is absolutely AMAZING! They cover all course study related to engineering and sciences. this makes Boeing worth it!
Cons
- no incentive to become a manager. they get shafted. all benefits are lost.
- doesn't matter how you perform, you don't necessarily compensated for a job well done.
- there is dead weight in the company that are immune to layoffs while people that are great workers end up with the pink slip because they are new. Not really fair system.
Advice to Senior Management
need to provide a better environment where employees are not slaughtered for bringing bad news or issues. For example...analysis showed that there was NO way we would be able to meet 787 schedule..many engineers approached sr managers but sr managers did not listen and the engineer who brought the bad news were reprimanded. managers would say... "that's not a find a way attitude"
also, provide more incentives to become manager. i continue to hear from managers that they don't know why they became a manager at boeing. they were paid more as an engineer.
Pros
Flexibile schedule; excellent work/life balance; low stress relative to similar jobs at other companies; many excellent opportunities to learn; very interesting work.
Cons
Strong union environment creates a breeding ground for mediocrity; the worst managers I have seen at any company, ever; tremendous amount of office politics and general BS; while benefits are excellent, pay is very low; many top employees leave in disgust; many poor employees simply surf the internet all day and will do so until they retire. There is a reason that Boeing is called the "Lazy B."
Shortly after my arrival at Boeing, an older, somewhat jaded engineer told me, "Here, looking good is more important than being good. And, no, they are not the same thing." It took me a while to truely appreciate his comment, but it is very true. Our manager was impressed by attendence of classes and seminars, and the use of buzzwords and cartch phrases like "5S", "Lean Plus", and "World Class Competitiveness". Our manager was not impressed by clever engineering solutions, technical know-how, and hard work. This was partly due the the face that my manager had little to know technical background, which has increasingly been a problem at the Lazy B.
Advice to Senior Management
Rid the company of all the perennial catch phrases and buzz words that plague it. You run an airplane manufacturer, not a political campaign and not a high school pep rally. Implement a culture of honesty and transparency. Treat your employees like adults. Fire the ones who don't act like adults.
Management is in serious need of more technical expertise. Hopefully the 787 has made this abundantly clear. If not, there is no hope for your company long-term.
Push for the engineers to be de-unionize. Only the lowest performing engineers actually want to be in a union. Increase pay and reduce benefits, especially per-bus.
Seriously raise expectations. Demand hard work. Fire employees who surf the internet all day.
As I write this, there is a question in the field below asking, "Do you approve of the way Scott E. Carson is leading Boeing Commercial Airplanes?" Fortunately, he isn't anymore, and I understand that things are changing for the better. I'll just say this: Scott Carson's appointment to CEO of BCA and his performance in that position epitomize most of the things that are wrong with The Boeing Company.
Pros
A big company, a of opportunities... The pace of working is okay.
Cons
more old people than young people
Advice to Senior Management
Leadership at BCA is very good to follow. Don't need to change
Pros
Fairy pay for the amount of work you do. Pay overtime which is great because most of the companies do not pay employees overtime. It has great benefits.
Cons
This company has been around which mean, unlike a start up, it lacks excitement and energy. The room to grow can be limited unless you are in a right group with a manager who watches your career path
Advice to Senior Management
The manager should spend more time with employees, getting to know them and interacting with them. Spends some less time in the office but more time in the lab
