Boise Cascade/OfficeMax was the best company I have ever worked for.

Administrative Specialist/Marketing Coordinator (Former Employee)
Garden Grove, CA

I worked at Boise Cascade

ProsWorking at Boise Cascade/OfficeMax was a positive experience. They care for their employees. They made coming to work fun. There were opportunities to cross train and grow. I actually did not cringe when Monday came around because I liked working there. All my co-workers were like a second family. I truly miss working there, but will always remember it fondly.

ConsIt could be slow climbing the ladder there, but they still gave you the opportunity to learn other positions so when the time was right you could move up.

Advice to Senior ManagementI would just say to continue to do the great work that they have been doing all these years. I had quite a few managers there and loved them all.

Great Place to work at

District Sales Manager (Former Employee)
Monterrey, Nuevo León (Mexico)

I worked at Boise Cascade

ProsIt is a highly professional company, sales and operations structure allways in place ready to generate communication and performance.

ConsIt was a tough change regarding the Office Max aquisition, we allways wanted more information in order to be prepared for the change, but things happened very quicly, which also meant to learn how to work in that environment. Not bad however.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo review all past profiles not currently in your company, and device a "recovery plan" I am sure you will find pleasant surprises.

Good company to work for

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Boise Cascade full-time for more than 3 years

ProsBoise Cascade offers a competitive level of pay within its industry. Their upper management is striving to be productive while at the same time setting the goal to have satisfied employees.

ConsEmployees may have to work at lower level, intensive positions for several years before they are able to move up to a better position that is less physically intensive.

Advice to Senior ManagementConsider more ways of cross training and varying employee's responsibilities.

Some very easy jobs, good machines, some very hard jobs with terrible machines.

Machine Operator (Current Employee)
International Falls, MN

I have been working at Boise Cascade full-time for more than 10 years

ProsPay, Union, Shift work with a week off every month, pretty much all the overtime you want. Some days are very easy and boring if machines are running good. That is when they are making money, right?

ConsPaper industry is very competitive and management has just cut 300 jobs and the future doesn't look very bright for the 600 that are left. Mill is on Canadian Border, so if you love -40 degree winter days, 8 month winters and a 3 hour drive to get to a major city, this is the right place for you.

Advice to Senior ManagementMiddle managers are pretty decent, considering all the pressure that is coming from upper management and the almighty stockholders. Free trade act kind of screwed us all.

Good company with caring management

Administrative Tech (Current Employee)

I have been working at Boise Cascade full-time for more than a year

ProsCEO, President, regional manager, etc. very caring and competent. There are a lot of great supervisors
Decent salaries and benefits
Employees feel valued

ConsIt's a bit of a good ol' boy system (at least at this region)
There are no management tracks and promotions are slow
Seems like a large discrepancy in women's salaries compared to men's salaries

Advice to Senior ManagementThere are a lot of brilliant younger employees who are stuck in entry level or secretary type jobs. If these employees were put on a "management track" of some sort, they would be able to contribute a lot more to the company. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing a lot of talent to other companies, as well as a large skills discrepancy when all the baby boomers retire and the 20-somethings don't have the experience to fill their shoes.

Good engineering intern experience

Capital Engineering Intern (Former Employee)
International Falls, MN

I worked at Boise Cascade as an intern for less than a year

ProsAn internship here let's you work with experienced professionals that are willing to help and teach interns in an environment that provides great opportunities to learn and grow in your field. The wage for this internship is exceptional as well. And the cost of living in International Falls is pretty low.

ConsThere might not always be enough work to fill up a work week and as with anywhere else, there might be other employees that get on your nerves.
