I worked at Boise Cascade full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay for general labor. 40 hours plus with lots of OT. Small town and most workers work hard for the company. There is focus on safety and it is non union mill.

    Cons

Wish just more update equipment on some things that could easily been replaced.

    I worked at Boise Cascade

    Pros

Laid back environment, very egalitarian. PTO was more than reasonable and the hours were the same everyday. Sales is empowered to negotiate prices even at low levels. Mistakes are expected and the management is more interested in solving the problem than finding who is to blame.

    Cons

Not much room to move up. You're waiting for someone to retire in order to get good products to sell. Not a good place if you're not interested in being an entrepreneur type. A promotion here is more like a lateral move and because there is such low turnover there is rarely a chance to make a decent paycheck until you have around 5 years in. It's a very low pay scale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My experience here was great and you should really look for certain traits in the people you hire. Entrepreneur types would probably excel here as the selling is much like running your own business.

I have been working at Boise Cascade full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Maintains a decentralized structure but rapidly deploys best practices. Strong and efficient internal controls for accounting and HR.

    Cons

    Easy to become impatient

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be careful with the transition from older associates to newer ones.... You may experience a much greater loss of productivity than you anticipated in the next 5 years due to a loss of many associates to retirement.

I have been working at Boise Cascade

    Pros

Wage is competitive, Benefits are better than a lot of smaller Co.

    Cons

Management is multi layered and Antiquated. Production workers truly receive no respect from Co. You are just a "body" to feel a "spot" you are expendable, and they let you know this. Micromanaged like I have ever encountered. Rumors run rampant and Management is just as bad. You can not miss any work, do not get hurt or you will be singled out until you break. This Co. Allows the bullies to run over other employees and lets "these type" of bullies to have the better jobs as long as they "report" their distorted view of what happens on the daily~
Horrible place to work but there are not many mills left in the area. You will be hard pressed to find a Happy, Content employee.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees not just the employees that are "the squeaky wheels" let your employees know what is going on. Ex: if your machine is going down, let them know. If you are putting in new Machine ask the Operators their opinions After all we are the ones running the machines. This is why you run into long term problems with new machinery, you don't find out what the TRUE needs are before you go to the whole expense of installing. The operators should be the first person you ask, instead we are never asked or even considered. Be more human. If you run a miserable place to work it backfires on you~ this is why you have Huge turnover even though you pay competitive. Take a page out of some of the newer Co.' Like Google, or Zappos. Maybe read Tony Hsieh book Delivering Happiness.

    Pros

Big Company, there should be good opportunity for growth.

    Cons

Big Company, too many political games.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To many political games. People in positions of authority are not qualified in the fields they manage. They have lost site of "The Customer Comes First." To many people in management trying to keep they're job, instead of taking time to understand how to do they're job.

Former Employee - Machine Operator in Medford, OR

I worked at Boise Cascade full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

1.) The base hourly wages are great for the valley. The benefits package is fair as well.
2.) Many great people work at Boise. Great friendships can be forged.
3.) The work is fast and hard. This could be a pro or con
4.) Most of the management (superintendents and above) are competent.

    Cons

1.) While upper managers are very intelligent, compassionate, and motivated; the same is not always true of department leads and shift supervisors. In fact, most of them are nincompoops.
2.) Due to the short-comings mentioned in #1, a significant communication gap exists where operators feel disconnected from management and communication (all around) is so poor that it borders on incompetence.
3.) Very often, leads/supervisors pursue personal agendas under the guise of "safety" and / or "best in class".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold higher standards of your leads and supervisors.
Make more information public so people know what is going on.

I have been working at Boise Cascade full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Boise Cascade offers a competitive level of pay within its industry. Their upper management is striving to be productive while at the same time setting the goal to have satisfied employees.

    Cons

Employees may have to work at lower level, intensive positions for several years before they are able to move up to a better position that is less physically intensive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider more ways of cross training and varying employee's responsibilities.
