Some very easy jobs, good machines, some very hard jobs with terrible machines.

I have been working at Boise Cascade full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay, Union, Shift work with a week off every month, pretty much all the overtime you want. Some days are very easy and boring if machines are running good. That is when they are making money, right?

    Cons

Paper industry is very competitive and management has just cut 300 jobs and the future doesn't look very bright for the 600 that are left. Mill is on Canadian Border, so if you love -40 degree winter days, 8 month winters and a 3 hour drive to get to a major city, this is the right place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle managers are pretty decent, considering all the pressure that is coming from upper management and the almighty stockholders. Free trade act kind of screwed us all.

Union and management at odds made for a bad environment. Promotions based on who you know.

I worked at Boise Cascade full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, great pay. The coworkers are great people to work with. People are helpful when they are needed. Everything is based on seniority as Far as other union jobs. I have never seen a lay off. Stay on the bosses good side and you'll enjoy the job. This is the best job for those that have no schooling. Can't beat the benefits.

    Cons

In the summer it's very hot in the mill, well over a hundred with no way to cool off. Management will side with anyone in management over any employee unless there is absolute proof. Most workers won't take a side against management due to the possible repercussions they could face. Safety is said to be important but they will write up anyone that gets hurt regardless if it's the companies fault.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look at woman and men equally. Use those employees that want to advance. Hold your Supervisors to the highest standards. Promote those that have an education in the field. Anyone that is put in a supervisor trainee position should be respected by co workers. If someone has a complaint take it seriously,

I have been working at Boise Cascade full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

CEO, President, regional manager, etc. very caring and competent. There are a lot of great supervisors
    Decent salaries and benefits
    Employees feel valued

    Cons

It's a bit of a good ol' boy system (at least at this region)
There are no management tracks and promotions are slow
Seems like a large discrepancy in women's salaries compared to men's salaries

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are a lot of brilliant younger employees who are stuck in entry level or secretary type jobs. If these employees were put on a "management track" of some sort, they would be able to contribute a lot more to the company. Otherwise, you run the risk of losing a lot of talent to other companies, as well as a large skills discrepancy when all the baby boomers retire and the 20-somethings don't have the experience to fill their shoes.

I worked at Boise Cascade as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

An internship here let's you work with experienced professionals that are willing to help and teach interns in an environment that provides great opportunities to learn and grow in your field. The wage for this internship is exceptional as well. And the cost of living in International Falls is pretty low.

    Cons

There might not always be enough work to fill up a work week and as with anywhere else, there might be other employees that get on your nerves.

    I worked at Boise Cascade

    Pros

Working at Boise Cascade/OfficeMax was a positive experience. They care for their employees. They made coming to work fun. There were opportunities to cross train and grow. I actually did not cringe when Monday came around because I liked working there. All my co-workers were like a second family. I truly miss working there, but will always remember it fondly.

    Cons

It could be slow climbing the ladder there, but they still gave you the opportunity to learn other positions so when the time was right you could move up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would just say to continue to do the great work that they have been doing all these years. I had quite a few managers there and loved them all.
