I worked at Boise full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The compensation package and benefits were good, along with the overall philosophy of the company.

    Cons

At the level I was hired at there was not much training or direction even though I was new to the company. In my opinion there was not much work-life balance. The outside sales positions put in a lot more hours than the inside positions.

I worked at Boise full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Not much other than a paycheck.

    Cons

Everything! This company is a joke. Management is incompetent and has poor judgement. Be prepared to work a minimum of 60 hours per week, only to be laid off after acquisition with Packaging Corp. of America. The company only values young talent. Very few promotional opportunities. Take my advice, DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and value mature employees. Offer mentoring and career paths. It would be helpful if you actually knew something about the area and people you are 'managing'.

I worked at Boise full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The people and culture of the operation/manufacturing communities within the company.

    Cons

Paper side of the business in decline, expect continued staff reductions is that segment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Opportunity to incorporate diversity in skills and personalities in the senior levels of management.

    Pros

The employees are wonderful and generate a real team of support and friendship. The training is pretty comprehensive.

    Cons

Management in the accounts payable department was terrible: petty, controlling, irrational and often unreasonable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the management of the AP department

I have been working at Boise full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Friendly and knowledgeable employees, approachable senior management, good growth strategy into the packaging business, great opportunities for career development, lots of lifers retiring in the next decade- company recognizes the need to recruit and develop future leaders.

    Cons

For those with high ambition, a stint in a manufacturing facility is highly desired; this can be a tough move.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

    Cons

3 year vesting period, lack of organizational transparency, and many execs have an "old boys club" mentality.

    I worked at Boise

    Pros

Boise Inc. is a stable company with decent benefits. The employees are great to work with. If you are a good networker, you might have a possibility of growth within the company.

    Cons

There is not enough growth. Pay is low. Depending on the department you take a position in, you could quickly outgrow your job role. Supervisors have no experience outside of this company and most of them have no management training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. If you repeatedly get complaints to HR for the same issues with the same department, make an effort to change things. Look at the management style of the different departments, if the turnover is unusually high, there might be a problem with the management in that department. Invest in training your employees and management staff.

I have been working at Boise

    Pros

Great location in the PDX area and management is really good at allowing their employees to balance the work/life issues. The organization is so thin, everyone has opportunities to make decisions.

    Cons

Smallish company in rapidly consolidating and deteriorating industry with brutal loan covenants. As a result, the company must focus on the near term financials and can't worry about developing people and longer terms strategic issues. So, you'll get opportunities to make decisions at the level you're currently at, but you won't get many (or any) promotional opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not much...given the loan convenants, their priorities are rational. Only thing they need to worry about is loosing talent as soon as the job market turns.
