Current Employee - Engineering Professional (Engineer III) in Montreal, QC (Canada)

    Pros

Best salary for how low expertise is required. Good benefits. Good relationship with colleagues if you speak french. If you know how to play the ball you can climb the ladder of success very fast, especially in management.
Competent production environment which is building safe and reliable.
Very good looking in the CV.

    Cons

Very inneficient core engineering: Huge tolerance to psychological harassment. The expertise and knowledge is raising enormous opposition and marginalization. R&D is a joke which lacks vision and courage.
The corruption at low and medium level of management is usual. On product development the technical reasoning is the last to be taken in consideration. Very old and conservative technology. Spending huge amount of monney( company and government) on fake or useless development projects. The high management is completelly disrupted from reality and is blindfolded by colorful, otimistic and false reports.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support and recognise the technical expertise no matter the color of the skin. The aircraft is flying with science and not with bill 101. Layoff the army of incompetent coordinators which are explaining the evidence in never ending meetings. Stop harassment, reorganise completely the HR department. Reward innovation , start from scratch a new R&D based on competency. Surround yourself with competent peoples even they might be more knowledgeable than you are.

Former Employee - Product Development Engineer in Montreal, QC (Canada)

    Pros

Its a name that looks good on your resume.

    Cons

The company does not know where its wants to be in the next 10-15 years.
Product development is just a joke.
Most of the work packages are out-sourced to suppliers. All one ends up doing is just integration (a.k.a baby-sitting the supplier)
Management ALWAYS want to show the supplier in poor light, so that they can look good to their higher-ups. This generates unnecessary friction and lack of trust b/w the OEM and the supplier. As a result the supplier does not care about the quality of the end-product.
For that matter there is in-fighting b/w product development groups across various locations.
Basic communication b/w structure and systems groups is absent.
Analysis methods and process are vintage 1950's! Core engineering group that is in-charge of bringing in new and improved methods of analysis has taken a hike!
Company runs on deadlines that in most cases are un-realistic.
Propriety methods from supplier's are most sought off as in-house talent is zero!
No solid or strong focus on R&D.
If you're not french and work in product development at Montreal, the chances of you getting side-lined are huge.
Managers are biased and not fair.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up and realize that you're in the business of making jets. If you want a piece of the action and want to compete with the likes of Boeing and Airbus, you need to clean up your act NOW!!!
    Invest in R&D
Promote technical managers and not man managers.
Put faith in people who can achieve and lead by example rather than those who just prepare colorful presentations, and can talk, talk and just talk.
And finally for god sake remove the french bias. Its hard to imagine a company which has only french speaking people at higher positions when you're flag-ship products (including the C-series) carry the Canadian flag!!

Former Employee - Mechanic in Tucson, AZ

    Pros

Fellow employees were great to be around. Management was the opposite. And HR is the WORST! Traveled to work at other locations. Each is essentially their own "business" and run differently.

    Cons

Working Hours were horrible. Best working hours were determined by seniority. There seniority = 8+ years. Constant threat of layoffs

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care about your lower level employees and fight FOR them!

Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Montreal, QC (Canada)

    Pros

Allows to work on wonderful product. Employees are proud of the product. If you have a bully character, you can get promotion.

    Cons

Absence of recognition. Only way to be recognized as a good supervisor/manager is to bully others and show you can be the tough guy. Horrible work environment because everybody complaints about someone on a regular basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Support your people to find solution to problems and be supportive (and allow proper ressources) instead of promoting the blame game.

    Pros

Good customer interaction. If you can foster a relationship with the customer in spite of the company then this is the best part of the job

    Cons

Probably the worst company I have worked with / for. Terrible IT system, low ethical code and bad pay and benefits. Luckily I will be leaving soon. On call virtually 24 hours a day.

    Pros

People I work with are very good and supportive

    Cons

Montreal HQ and the drones that work there. They do not respect anyone who is does not work there and have little regard for you if you do not have Manager in your title. Very very little opportunity for career advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a serious look at this Company that you are DESTROYING...it is the people on the ground floor who are supporting your grandeous titles and your flamboyant lifestyles...you are taking salaries that you do not deserve and pushing out substandard products. You are a disgrace.

Former Employee - Contract Administrator in Dorval, QC (Canada)

    Pros

you get to be near and fly in premium jets, Globals and challengers are cool.
    lots of free food
    benefits are fairly good
good work-life balance in that you can take time off for emergencies or personal issues without it being a problem.

    free parking
    cheap cafeteria
    some staff are really nice
deal with some of the best attorney's representing clients, so you learn a lot from them.

    Cons

management makes all the decisions, your role is to execute only.
Top-heavy, roughly 1 manager for every 2 employees. The vp hires mostly his incompetent friends in fluff jobs. Most work is done by a few competent key staff, who are pushed to burn-out.

Quarter ends are the worst period. you work long hours to meet last minute deals on the whim of management and their numbers, or sales people. No bonus or overtime.

Sales people who you partially support make good money and treat you like garbage, even though you negotiate the final deals for them. Half the time they ignore your calls.

Work is repetitive and mostly paper pushing as you cannot make decisions.

lots of wasted time in meetings.

VP doesn't care about lower-level staff, tried to avoid staff events, staff problems, and even the christmas party.

salaries are targeted by hr to be at most equal to the middle of thier comparison companies. Result is very poor pay outside the benefits. At the same time the company has no problems throwing out millions per customer in freebies to get cash a little earlier.

    lack of basic technology tools

no private rooms (conference) or offices to do your negotiations. Many times surrounding staff ignores you are talking to close a deal, and can be heard on your phone line.

incompetent staff gets promotions depending on their "extra-curricular" activities.

group bonus so individual efforts don't matter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get rid of most management and hire competent people. Pay people fairly for their work as your staff is a big part of your public face.
