Former Employee - Summer Intern in Pittsburgh, PA

    I worked at Bombardier Transportation

    Pros

As an intern, the team I worked with gave me ample opportunity to apply myself in ongoing projects. They were also flexible with summer plans, as they understand that their employees have lives outside of work.

    Cons

Some challenges include a lack of motivation for the employees. Pay freezes limit efforts to do extra.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more incentive for workers, while maintaining same work dynamic. All people were extremely helpful and work well as a unit.

I have been working at Bombardier Transportation full-time

    Pros

The people are great to work with. Almost everyone is extremely helpful and pleasant to interact with. The trains that Bombardier manufactures are some of the best on the market. If you have the energy and drive, Bombardier will encourage and enable you to perform root cause and corrective action projects, along with continuous improvement projects. As long as your performance is meeting expectations, you can perform your job with a pretty high level of autonomy.

    Cons

Sister sites are located in Canada and Mexico, and it can be difficult to work with them because of culture differences between the production plants, and international culture differences. The workload is extremely high, and management is either unable or unwilling to provide additional resources, manpower, etc. The stress level is extremely high and there are limited efforts to provide employee recognition. Opportunities for advancement are almost nonexistent. Other groups/functions repeatedly tell you how to do your job, and management will not advocate or stand up for you. There is a quality policy regarding the acceptance and creation of non-conformances, but it is only followed when it is convenient for the company, and rarely followed by Bombardier's own production faculties.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide constructive feedback to your employees on a regular basis, and solicit feedback on your performance from your direct reports. Prioritize work more effectively so that the key tasks are completed in a timely fashion. Hold people and functions accountable for their actions and have people correct their mistakes instead of encouraging a "Just get it done" attitude.

I have been working at Bombardier Transportation

    Pros

Free Parking, cafeteria, friendly and helpful employee culture

    Cons

Weak, isolated, out-of-touch senior management and getting worse. Unable to win new contracts, wage freeze, very limited opportunities for advancement, international travel opportunities have been almost completely eliminated to reduce costs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clean house in Berlin, sell the APM business to someone that will care about it again, raise pay to be competitive within the Transportation industry.

I have been working at Bombardier Transportation full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Bombardier Newark has a potential to excel at making the Airtrain an exceptional transportation system. The employees all want to do the best they can to make this happen.

    Cons

Training is pushed by upper management but due to the training coordinator the training classes are far and few between. When classes are scheduled they are usually canceled. Records of training are very limited and not up to date.
The other problem is material and tool management. The parts inventory is not kept up to date and there are no parts available to fix the trains. Tools are either non existent, broken or of very low quality.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Training should be managed by a professional who puts the training first, who can coordinate with HR so new hires are given the training as soon as possible. Refresher classes need to be done on time so that certifications do not expire.
Materials should have minimum reorder setup so we always have the stock. The tools should be set up so that all are available at all times
