    Double Edged sword

    Cashier/Bookseller (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThe people were great. The only pros were the employee discount and the co-workers.

ConsThere is a reason this place went out of business... They didn't keep up with the times and their employees were overworked and underpaid.

It WAS great, but it's a very different place now...

    Bookseller (Former Employee)
    Rockaway, NJ

    Pros- Great co-workers
    - Highly competent management
    - Respectful of work/life balance
    - Excellent performance feedback
    - Employee discount

    Cons- Little advancement opportunity
    - Unrealistic sales goals implemented by out of touch corporate employees
    - Excessive add-on sales push requirements (you're required to ask each customer you come in contact with at LEAST 5+ questions)
    - Frequent long/late-night schedules
    - Frequent schedule/payroll cuts

Advice to Senior ManagementThere's not much that I could suggest to management now that the company is going under. Most of the problems I experienced towards the end of my tenure at Borders were absolutely the result of the company beginning to fail. For example, when I started I was supposed to just be generally helpful when interacting with customers. By the time I left, the corporate office has insisted that so many last-ditch sales schemes be implemented, I was supposed to be asking each customer so many questions that people frequently just got frustrated and insisted that I stop talking to them entirely. I felt like I was harassing everyone.

    Borders

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThere are many passionate, talented people working at Borders at the store level. The products the company sells are interesting and the customer base is is overall culturally "plugged in" - engaged and intelligent.

ConsThe past 3 years have seen massive turnover in leadership, a depressing sales environment and the growth of a pretty abusive culture handed down from corporate to the store level.

Advice to Senior ManagementBook retail must change drastically to survive in any form. A depressed, demotivated workforce who've seen 4 CEOs in years, browbeaten by Regional VPs who care way more about dust on top of an employee break room refrigerator (I wish I were exaggerating) has little chance of succeeding.

    Border's on LI

    Media Seller (Former Employee)
    Westbury, NY

Pros- Decent discounts off books ONLY (music and DVDs were too expensive and the discount didn't cover the mark up)
    - Free or extremely cheap drinks and food from the cafe
    - Friendly co-workers
    - Relaxed atmosphere (for the most part)

Cons- Open late, so getting off of work is later than most places which can kill your social life
    - Constant book or media searches can get tedious and boring
    - Closing the store and alphabetizing the books/CDs/DVDs
    - Hard to gain recognition for good work
    - Selling Borders rewards to every customer

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more time on the selling floor to notice the people who actually do work and monitor the ones who do not. Give more recognition and advice on how to become a stronger candidate for possible promotions.

    Dead company

    Cafe Supervisor (Current Employee)
    New York, NY

ProsThere are great people who work and shop here. Many new challenges everyday.

ConsPoor leadership, bankrupt company that can't afford raises or decent starting wages to attract or keep even decent talent. Everyday it feels like things are getting worse and the CEO passes down positive information that is clearly BS, clearly from someone who has no idea what is going on in the field. Benefits have been cut, positions eliminated resulting in more work for fewer people for less pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind new ways to reward top performers, don't just threaten people with losing their job or the dismantling of the company.

Do not work here- the company is broke

    Bookseller (Current Employee)
    Freehold, NJ

ProsGood discount. You also get to borrow books. That's the only benefit left. Also, you get to work with books, but the company has a policy of staffing very minimally, so you don't get much of a chance to talk with customers about books.

ConsNo benefits, horrible upper management, no raises, no recognition, not enough money for all the work you do. No hours to staff the store. They also do not promote from within, so working hard for this company means nothing. I have not been appreciated here in the five years I have worked. The inventory system is a nightmare, as well as the ordering system.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your employees like human beings.
