Pros
Good level of training when we switched computer systems. Everyone was pretty nice with a few exceptions. Good rewards for signing people up for credit cards.
Cons
A lot of workplace gossip and cattyness, but it's the same for anywhere. Didn't really effect me very much
Advice to Senior Management
Don't pick favorites. Everyone is equal and should be given the same respect and no special treatment.
Pros
The pay is above state minimum wage.
Co-workers are nice.
Work environment is nice.
Your not ask to do more than you were hired to do.
Cons
You only get a half hour lunch break compared to rival companies offering associates an hour lunch.
It's hard to take 15 min. breaks.
Clothing tailored to a slightly older crowd.
Advice to Senior Management
The advice i would offer management is to pay people more money for non management positions. The wage may be high than minimum wage but it's still not high enough.
Pros
-decent benefit package and 401k match
-not a lot asked of you
-good rapport with co-workers
Cons
-no communication
-poor, unprofessional upper management
-too many "sacred cows" working in stores
-unqualified department managers/coordinators
-too many double standards
-get harrassed and belittled by customers trying to get a deal.
-have to sell crappy merchandise and return it
Advice to Senior Management
-target a younger market, store is all old people
-hold managers accountable and teach them some professionalism.
-empower your employees more. we know what we're doing
-set better schematics. some departments do floor moves every day
-hire some newer/fresher faces as buyers and managers
Pros
Its a very good company to work for from the stand point of the associates and its fun to go to work every day.
Cons
The pay scale is very low and their is almost no room for promotions and career growth. As a first job its good experience but its not and option for a career..
Advice to Senior Management
I would reward the workers that stuck by you through the bankruptcy better. Its great to be motivated and keep asking for our support but at some point you need to give the support back to the workers.
Pros
It was a great place to work, as in the people you worked with were great!
Cons
The pay is minimum wage. You may receive more based on experience, but don't hold your breath.
Advice to Senior Management
Pay your associates a little more, you will have a lower turn around rate. Don't expect so much out of your associates for so little.
Pros
Good pay for the retail industry.
Cons
The senior management is grossly incompetent.
Advice to Senior Management
Actually pay attention to what they are doing and how it effects customers and employees.
Pros
Friendly atmosphere. Upper Management visable and available
Cons
Hours, wages, inability to implement new ideas
Advice to Senior Management
none
Pros
Very good fringe benefits. Employee discount.
Cons
Work almost every weekend and holidays. Hard time scheduling doctor's appointments or any time off. Long hours on your feet. Can work the closing shift and have to be in for the morning shift the next day. Very long hours during Christmas and like all retail jobs hours dry up in January.
Advice to Senior Management
I worked at Boscov's for many years and many department managers could care less about the customers let alone the coworkers. Many of the department managers are there because they come to work. Upper management doesn't care about how coworkers are treated as long as the work is done. I had to fight with several department managers to try to help customers find replacement merchandise or to complete a set. Customer service involves helping the customer.
Pros
Decent benefits--Pay is good for upper level employees--Time off during non-holiday season--They are fair and impartial--Many long term employees (stable)--Excellent customer service--Up to four weeks vacation, although it takes 15 years to acquire--Upper management has been realatively stable for years
Cons
Excessive holiday hours--Christmas is difficult if not impossible to enjoy, the hours get worse every year. This is a result of other retailers opening at ridiculous hours. this has snowballed to the point of absurdity. (Black Friday Hours: Last year I worked 4:15 am to 10:30 pm.) --Low pay for entry level--No sick days yet a newly implemented point program for sick days and lateness
Advice to Senior Management
Stop giving up on so many types of business--Reward employee loyalty--Hang in there with good stores, cut bait on the underachievers when necessary
