I have been working at Bose

    Pros

Good pay, benefits & employee discount.

    Cons

Poor change management, lacking transparency from mgmt, knee-jerky org and process changes, increasing political angst x-dept/function, no longer leading the market but following, slowly.

The radically changed culture of the last year or so is driving many good people away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to basics and truly focus on innovation.

I worked at Bose part-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Allowed for lots of training and reviews. Great people to work with -- the environment was both hardworking and very friendly team. Everyone was very knowledgeable about the products and the team-based commission encouraged the team working together, not working against each other to steal sales. Overall great company to work for! Great culture and lots of benefits.

    Cons

During busy seasons, time-off was hard to come by and trying to manage some of the store goals set often were far too high to be achieved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider, during the holiday seasons, allowing for more staff to join the team -- even if it is temporary -- to help out with workload and time commitments

I have been working at Bose

    Pros

This is one of the smartest company's I have ever worked at. My colleagues (in all departments) are intelligent, passionate and highly engaged in their work. People here believe in the brand, advocate for the company and take their role as stewards of the brand seriously. If you are an engineer, you could not ask for a better place to work. The company is founded on the principle of being a research company first and foremost. Work-life balance is easier to strike here than at other large companies. I love working here because people take their continuous education very seriously and it is a culture of learning.

    Cons

The company is going through a lot of transition and transformation. Bose is needing to change many legacy practices to be more competitive in the market and become more nimble and agile. There is a lot of tenure throughout the company and this causes tension with long-term employees trying to preserve some legacy practices that need to be retired. Example of this is that the company is very conservative in putting new technologies into their products and that hinders our ability to attract, younger, more tech savvy customers. It is a time of much change here and if you are uncomfortable with uncertainty, this is not the place for you right now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to challenge legacy practices and look for ways to bring together departments to cut down on waste and remove silos.

I worked at Bose as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

"Let's Play" culture, good experience from a UX Designer point of view

    Cons

Cliques of employees in certain departments (HOME ENTERTAINMENT)--if you're part of it, it's great; if not, you feel like you're being left out
    Poor, overwhelmed management
Constant turnover due to company's unwritten policy of hiring more contractors than permanent employees
They want "young" employees (yes, I actually heard a manager say that in a department meeting)
Endless meetings and "scrums" (aka coffee breaks) that interrupt workflow, process, and progress
Newer managers don't have a clue about what is going on in their departments because they are grappling with keeping their own heads above water with their workloads

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a good look at and get rid of the dead wood. A lot of these seem to be Bose employees pre-economic downturn who are not coping well with the rapid changes in the home entertainment industry.
Break up the cliques, a pervasive part of Bose culture

I have been working at Bose

    Pros

Good work/personal life balance, very good vacation package, tuition reimbursement, the company promotes working as part of a team rather than individually.

    Cons

Willingness to relocate for most promotions, a traditional company that can take time to adjust to new trends.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider more employees opinions and advices in regards to new products.

I worked at Bose as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

I was assigned challenging work and everyone was passionate about delivering a great product. It's a private company so much of their motivation came from designing a better experience for the customer.

    Cons

It's an established company with a great work life balance, but it meant working with people in a stage of their life where they are ready to settle down.
