I have been working at Boston College full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

BC walks its talk; it treats employees extremely well, offering a wide range of benefits and perqs, excellent career development opportunities, good work-life balance, and generally treating its employees with respect. Very friendly atmosphere for people who might worry that they'd be out of place in a Catholic institution, such as GLBT folks, atheists, etc - you'll have no issues at BC. It truly lives its mission as an educator and an employer, and how often can you say that? I have never worked at any other company that I would even think of giving five stars to in the "culture and values" area, but BC deserves every one of them.

Salary is low-average, which is usual at universities, but benefits are quite good, vacation time is fantastic, and tuition benefits plus the many, many, MANY other benefits available at an excellent university are unmatched.

I joined BC during the recession, and it was truly astonishing to be in a place where they were expanding, doing construction, and spending money while the rest of the world got laid off. It's a school with tremendous potential and a clear vision and plan for realizing that potential.

My advice to anyone considering a job at BC: leap on it. It's a great place to work.

    Cons

Extraordinarily hierarchical organization. It can be frustrating to try to get things done because heaven forbid we proceed without the approval of every single person on campus for every single initiative. And then let's double check just in case. It's possible that this is unique to my department, which is run by a lovely and very talented guy who's also a pathological micromanager - culture trickles down, so I can't say that this is pervasive across the institution, but it certainly is in the development department.

I have been working at Boston College full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Benefits and salary are good.

    Cons

    1) Management is disconnected from the reality of the workplace. They have lofty goals, but not very interested in hiring the staff to accomplish them. Instead, they stretch the staff they have to the breaking point and it drives many to seek alternative employment. 2) Some long-time employees milk the system and do as little as possible. This creates a lot of tension and frustration in the workplace for those burning the candle at both ends to get the job done. 3) No real room to move up

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come out of your offices and get experience in the thick of things, in the day to day of work. You can't understand the reality of the workplace unless you get out of your pretty offices and really experience what your workers do. Keep in mind that if your workforce is a stressed out mess, the customers they serve will feel it.
