I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The salary is higher than most school districts. This is a time of great change in the district.Chaos can be positive or negative. If you are able to roll with the changes you may do well.

    Cons

This is a time of great change in the district. Chaos is opportunity but it can also be a time of rash decisions over which you have no control.

    Advice to Management

During this time of transition, teachers should be the people that you listen to rather than advisors. For example, our current IIT software is least useful for the end user. When designing/choosing software solutions you should always look to how it will function in the hands of the end user. Currently we have disparate systems that do not "talk to each other" so that work can be accomplished quickly and efficiently. If you want to run a lean organization, your technology should be one of the ways that you accomplish more with less.

I have been working at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The privilege of helping educate a melting pot of children from all over the world in the best city in the world is worth its weight in gold. A Boston public school educated child is a child that will be prepared for higher education with the tools to succeed.

    Cons

The challenges of balancing teaching, managing behavior, implementation of technology, trying to create independent thinkers with a voice. Lowering anxiety levels of all students in respect to all of the assessment testing. More teaching less testing!

    Advice to Management

Create more trade school opportunities for students that might not be so academically inclined. Hire more teachers of different ethnicities so we can better serve our communities and increase the budget so we teachers have everything we need to better service our students.

    Pros

Bps offers great medical dental and vision benefits. As well as a teachers pension. Opportunities for advancement are excellent. Variety of schools to choose from.

    Cons

Some challenging students at times. Many students in a class. Some colleagues with very negative attitude toward job. Tough commute if not living in city.

    Advice to Management

Listen to requests and comments from teachers as well as parents and students. Decrease class size in all schools and subjects.

    Pros

A Strong Teacher's Union that tirelessly battles outside efforts to dismantle Public Education, many dedicated, talented teachers, a diverse student body, and some excellent Headmasters as well.

    Cons

Lack of $$$, (poor facilities, little to no resources) and constant looming budget cuts begin to wear on the morale of everyone involved. Increasingly BPS has focussed on weakening the Teacher's Union's rights at all costs. There are many low performing schools (E.g. Madison Park) that have outside agencies cyclicly hiring and then firing large portions of staff and creating such a hostile work environment that only the most desperate would ever consider working there.

    Advice to Management

Please allocate more money in the City Budget for school infrastructure projects/maintenance and encourage talented teachers (through increased resources, salaries, lessened workloads) to stay!

I worked at Boston Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Genuine commitment to education for all students. Strong teacher's union with excellent pay and benefits. Outstanding quality of most teachers and great camaraderie. Strong commitment to teacher training.

    Cons

Budget pressure from loss to charter schools. Frequent turnover of principals and some central office people leads to changing policies.

    Advice to Management

Ease pressure on principals and keep them in place longer.
