I worked at Boston full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

On the ground experience working in affordable housing development. Good work /life balance. Making positive changes in city for the residents.

    Cons

Frequent reorganizations can hamper effectiveness, there are some political appointees in key positions who are not interested in doing a good job. They are sometimes beholden to developers.

    Recommends
    Positive Outlook
  2. Decent internship experience. Worked with a task force that cleaned up activities in surrounding Boston neighborhoods.

Former Intern - Intern in Boston, MA

I worked at Boston as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Staff is composed of people with a diverse background. They are helpful and friendly for the most part. Work setting was stable and organized

    Cons

Supervisors usually care more their own work than the people they are in charge of. Independence is one thing, but not having enough active tasks to be handed to interns is another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more active with the youth if you choose to take on an internship program. There purpose is to try and get them experience working and learn something.

I worked at Boston full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

All of my coworkers were very nice, my work gave back to the community, the standards of work and etiquette are high, and benefits are fair. There was vacation, sick time, and tuition reimbursement, which was of value to me.

    Cons

Pay was way below average, and in order to make more money you need to stay there longer, or get promoted. Salary is not based on merit. Politics are totally involved, obviously. The bathrooms are awful.

    Pros

One of the best reason to work in Boston is easy access to work.

    Cons

The downside to working in Boston is to get a good job you have to know someone. Too much politics.

    Pros

Meet a lot of people, learn the city, learn a profession and a disciplined field.

    Cons

Fractured leadership. No consistency with rules and regulations. To much patronage hiring at the top of the chain of command.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen more to the patrol force, and act on some of there ideas.

Former Contractor - Anonymous Contractor in Boston, MA

I worked at Boston as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere, ability to work on projects independently, well paid. I really enjoyed learning the ins and outs of how Jobs and Community Services works, but the expectations of work were so low (and there was often no work to do) that I did not gain much from the experience.

    Cons

Crazy boring. There was never much to do, and I spent a lot of time reading blogs on my computer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expect workers to do work. Do work yourself.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
